Description

"Hunting," March 1961. I only recently noticed that Jack's handwritten captions are visible under the lettering, indicating that he also scripted this story(?).

I've never seen this comic...but you can count on me getting it bloody soon...with the greatest respect I'd trade my left nut for this art.

I'll take pages like this little number all day over the classic hero stuff. It is so fantastic to get a glimpse of hidden issues by Kirby. Quite stunning! Thanks for posting!

As we all know Kirby was very unhappy at Gilberton and drew only a number of WAU pages and one full-length story. Even when paid some of the lowest rates in the industry, Kirby delivered a stellar job like this page enhanced by slick Ayers inks. As for the scripting, I asked CI researcher Bill Jones, JR about it. This is his reply: "Gilberton editor Roberta Strauss Feuerlicht would never -- never -- have allowed what she would have considered a mere artist (Kirby's name and reputation would have meant next-to-nothing to her) to interpolate either dialogue or narrative text, over which she maintained famously tight control. This page's script is quite clearly the work of Gilberton's resident writer and history specialist Alfred Sundel (still active), who would not stand for any tampering with his text. Backup research would have been provided by Helene Lecar. At Gilberton, the demands of the text drove the publications, and artists conformed or departed." Nuff' said.

Thanks for the info, Lars! Perhaps Jack was assessing how much room he had for art after adding the text he was provided, as it is definitely his handwriting on the page. Seems like a lot of effort, but Kirby was devoted to his craft.
