WINSOR McCAY (1867/1934) - The San Francisco Examiner "Editorial Cartoon Illustration" Sunday 15 june - 1924

A Winsor McCay original, one of the greatest comic artists of all time, is not only an elegant piece of artwork, but also a significant historical document. His editorials, strips, and stories appeared in newspapers and reflected the popular ideals, optimism, fears, irony, humor, and attitudes of the early 20th Century. McCay's greatest outlet for these ideas was his masterpiece "Little Nemo In Slumberland", where he displayed a mesmserizing imagination combined with a progressive art nouveau style to create adventures in worlds within dreams. McCay's cartooning mastery also extended to the field of animation where he hoisted that fledgling industry with classic works such as "Gertie the Dinosaur". Some of the most exquisite McCay pieces were done for newspaper editorials. This wonderful and large drawing has all of the hallmarks of a Winsor McCay piece, with fantastic cross-hatching, dynamic and dark linework around the figures.

Un originale di Winsor McCay, uno dei pi� grandi artisti di fumetti di tutti i tempi, non � solo un'elegante opera d'arte, ma anche un significativo documento storico. I suoi editoriali, strisce e storie apparivano sui giornali e riflettevano gli ideali popolari, l'ottimismo, le paure, l'ironia, l'umorismo e gli atteggiamenti del primo Novecento. Il pi� grande sbocco di McCay per queste idee fu il suo capolavoro "Little Nemo In Slumberland", in cui mostr� un'immaginazione ipnotizzante combinata con uno stile progressista "art nouveau" per creare avventure nel mondo dei sogni. La maestria dei fumetti di McCay si estese anche al campo dell'animazione, dove ha issato quella nascente industria con opere classiche come "Gertie the Dinosaur".
Alcuni dei pezzi pi� belli di McCay sono stati realizzati proprio per gli editoriali dei giornali, i cosiddetti "Editorial Cartoon". Questo meraviglioso e grande disegno, a doppia illustrazione, ha tutti i tratti distintivi di un pezzo di McCay, con fantastici tratteggi incrociati e le classiche dinamiche linee scure attorno alle figure.

Tavola museale! Complimenti, è grazie a questi originali che in futuro osservandone i dettagli, potremo ricostruire il modo di lavorare di questi grandissimi artisti che hanno fatto la storia del fumetto e dell'Arte con la A maiuscola.
