DescriptionThe Goonies, by Mike Hobson.A few months ago I shared some previously unseen sketch artworks and comps from the making of the Bacon / Reneric / Weistling / Farrell / Struzan version of the film’s poster. Today I wanna share some stuff from the Alvin version, as I received these awesome (and also never before seen) comps by Hobson. Hobson’s work is spread all over the world in private collections, so I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of it around. He helped Alvin out in many titles as a sketch artist (posters like “Spaceballs”, “Golden Child”, “The Lion King” or “Willow” owe a lot to Hobson), and he was great at knowing what compositions would make the best out of Alvin’s skills. As far as I know, he did 9 comps for “The Goonies” (or at least those are the ones I know that survived). You can see the other 6 in the additional pics area. These are all on private collections, none available for sale (3 in the US, 1 in Australia, and 2 in Europe... I spent years tracking these down, so I did the homework XD). Intralink’s rounded “Goonies” logo was designed by Bill McCloskey, another key figure when it comes to Alvin’s work. Bill’s first project working with Alvin was “E.T.”. After that, they worked on campaigns for 69 film titles, and 48 out of those became an actual finished, printed poster. The final logo design used on the posters was Paul S. Power’s. Aside from a couple of exceptions, you’ll notice there’s a few elements they kept playing around with: treasure maps, silhouettes or backlit figures, big skies... Stuff that Alvin really knew how to paint. If I remember properly, at some point the studio asked not to include any pirate ships on the poster (I assume they wanted to keep that a surprise for the film) though. I also find it interesting that the third of these comps is reminiscent of Noriyoshi Ohrai’s european poster. Could be a coincidence, but I wonder if Ohrai was shown some of these as a reference back then. These are aprox A3. The actual pencil drawing area is 33 cms tall. They are on vellum (it can't be clearly seen on the pics because they’re taped to a white cardboard). They also have a protective transparent overlay on top. Social/Sharing |
