Description

I love the Osamu Tezuka Black Jack manga by way of the Drawn & Quarterly English language publications. The character Black Jack is an unlicensed surgeon who is highly skilled and innovative. He charges astronomical fees, but will take on cases as he sees fit by his own standards. My favorite story involves an endangered wild animal who gets loose from a poacher's secret cage on a ferry. The injured parties include a child passenger, an unscrupulous politician involved in development, and the animal itself. The surgeon treats them all with his own formula for triage. Another favorite reveals the secret beneficiary of Black Jack's fees. Original manga pages are unavailable so I content myself with the anime art. This cel seems to be from the movie based on the aspect ratio.

Original manga pages from the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum were displayed at the Anime America convention in Santa Clara, California in 1993. The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco set up the Tezuka: the Marvel of Manga exhibition in 2007. I like this unofficial exhibit review. These were my opportunities to see Tezuka originals in my area.
