I grew up playing AD&D with my friends and my sisters. I have a real soft spot for the nostalgia of the first generation of manuals and guides and when I started playing with my kids, I searched out first editions of all the regular books like Dungeon Master's Guide, Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and Fiend Folio. I still love those primitive illustrations of the monsters and prefer them to the much more detailed and better illustrated versions you see in the more recent updated guides. For me, my favorite monsters in the book were the Lich, Beholder, Mind Flayer and Intellect Devourer. Thanks to an initially totally unrelated comic art deal, these came in to my possession. Published in Nov 1988 in Dragon Magazine on the Ecology of the Spectator and introducing a whole new class of monsters that were defined and Beholder-kin came in to being. These were later included in 1989 in the Monstrous Companion Three Forgotten Realms Appendix. I have a few vintage D&D pieces in my collection but not nearly enough so if you have any, I'd be very interested in discussing. I dream of owning the original cover to Player's handbook and monster drawings for the Beholder and Mind Flayer. I am really happy to add the Spectator (Beholder-kin with extra eyes on tentacles) and Eye of the Deep(underwater Beholder) to my collection. A big thanks to Nate for working on a trade deal that made us both happy.
