Description

Mister Miracle Scott Free Unmasked by Chris Stevens
My love for the Tom King and Mitch Gerads Mister Miracle knows no bounds. In January of 2020 Felix Comic Art opened Chris Steven's Commission list. Chris regular commissions were a little beyond my price range but this time they offered 6x9 bust options and I was able to make that work. I did splurge for the colored option and boy am I so happy I did. Chris's work is renowned, his work with colors is spectacular and this incredible piece is no different thank you to Chris and to Felix Comic Art for making this piece happen!!!! #DC #JackKirby #NewGods #TomKing #MitchGerads #DarkseidIs

“I can always escape.”

In 2017 Tom King and Mitch Gerads rele ased their seminal work Mister Miracle which was a story that captured me from panel one. Based on the New Gods characters created by Jack “King” Kirby, Mister Miracle tells the story of Scott Free, a New God who is a super escape artist. Scott is the son of a deity and New Genesis leader, Highfather. At birth Scott was given to the evil ruler of Apokalips, Darkseid. The son of god (Scott Free aka Mister Miracle) being raised (tortured) by the devil (Darkseid). The son of the Devil (Orion) being raised by god (Highfather) On New Genesis. This biblical exchange, done to bring peace to a hundred-year war, provides little solace for our protagonist. The trauma leaves many scars on Scott and his wife Big Barda. The opening page shows us Scott bleeding out after a suicide attempt.
Mister Miracle takes all the best lessons from some of King’s best work (Vision and Omega Men) and evolves it into something very special. The book is reverent to Kirby and the Fourth World capturing Kirby’s ability to weave the intimate and the epic. Watching Scott manage his depression and anxiety while fighting a war with Apokolips and keeping his marriage with Big Barda intact all while becoming a father was amazing. I love how King writes Scott and Barda’s relationship. Full of love, passion, disappointment, anger and joy.
The story has been rightfully, universally praised. In 2017 and 2018 Mister Miracle won back to back Eisner’s in multiple categories. Every one of them richly deserved. The art and the use nine-panel grid to pace the story is masterful and give it such a unique pulse. I particularly love it’s use during the True or False trial of Mister Miracle. King and Gerads do an amazing job showing the power of Darkseid with two simple words, “Darkseid is.” With an all-black panel with only that phrase the creators allowed the reader to eloquently experience the dread and anxiety Scott was confronting. It so eloquently represents the Anti Life Equation. The anti-life equation “composed of fears and anxieties of the human mind.” This is Darkseid’s holy grail.
As it was being released in single issues, I finally understood how comic fans were feeling in 1986 when Watchmen (which also used a nine-panel grid) and Dark Knight Returns were coming out. For the longest time, I compared it to a great magic trick. Tom King and Mitch Gerads made their pledge, their turn was bold and daring, and their prestige was marvelous. But in the story Scott makes a remark about what he does is not a trick its performing. And I feel like that this is a better description of what King and Gerads are doing. This series is a brilliantly executed comic, it’s just so seamless that it only looks like magic.
