Fire Lad by Gene Gonzales and Simon Gough

Staq Mavlen�is the subject of this latest commission collaboration from Gene Gonzales and Simon Gough. Staq is one the original members of the Legion of Substitute Heroes. His ability to breathe fire was impressive, but his lack of control kept him from joining the Legion of Super-Heroes. Staq's appearance has evolved a bit over the years (at one point his features became quite alien-looking), and his hair can change anytime, since it is actually fire. When the Subs returned to action in the "Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes", Staq had this new Gary Frank design, and I thought that it was pretty awesome. Gene had never drawn it before, so I was glad to commission him to do it. And of course he rocked it! Staq's pose looks like he's ready for action, and his little breath of flame is giving any villains an�idea of the heat they will soon be feeling. I also love the bit with the flames from his hair moving onto the border of the background! Simon got his talented hands on this one and added some eye-popping colors. I love the warm reds, oranges and yellows. And I really dig the fiery background he added. As usual, I am beyond impressed by the work that Gene and Simon deliver. they are the best!
