Description

We've never offered a superhero panel page by the great Schomburg before, and the number of surviving pages is surely very low. He drew few interior stories in the first place, understandably choosing to focus on his incredible covers, and Golden Age Timely superhero art has for the most part not survived. Schomburg left the comics business in about 1951, and was only seen again in a comic book once after that: for the six-page chapter (plus cover) he drew for this annual in 1977. The annual was intentionally done after the fashion of the Golden Age Justice Society, that is to say, each chapter featured one team member in solo action, and each chapter was drawn by a different artist. Portraying the Human Torch in World War II action was the perfect assignment for the veteran of so many such covers!
