DescriptionNE Patriots Irving Fryar 1990 Ready To Rumble Cartoon by Eddie Germano 13 x 21. Possibly published in October of 1990 before Thursday the 18thOctober 11th 1990 News Article: New England Patriots wide receiver Irving Fryar, who faces a felony weapons charge, says "I did what I had to do" to help teammate Hart Lee Dykes escape an unruly crowd outside a Providence, R.I., nightclub early Wednesday. Dykes, also a wide receiver, formerly of Oklahoma State University, remained hospitalized with an injury to his left eye. A Rhode Island Hospital spokesman said he was in satisfactory condition this morning. Fryar, charged with possessing a weapon without a permit, was released after a court appearance Wednesday in which he entered no plea. He promised to return for future hearings or forfeit $10,000. A hearing is scheduled Dec. 12. The 9mm handgun was registered in Massachusetts but not in Rhode Island, said detective Capt. Bernard Gannon. Fryar was hit over the head during the early morning scuffle and required stitches to close a gash. Witnesses told police that after being hit, Fryar ran to his car, grabbed a handgun, put it in his boot and returned to the scene, according to the police report. It said he pointed the gun at people who "scattered and fled in all directions." Fryar would not talk to reporters after his District Court appearance. But later he told WHJJ radio: "I got eight stitches in my head, and I didn't see who hit me. I saw Hart Lee on the ground. He was bleeding, and there were some people kicking him, and I did what I had to do, or what I felt I had to do." Fryar's attorney, Peter DiBiase, said his client was walking to his car outside Club Shalimar around 1:20 a.m. EDT when he noticed Dykes arguing with some people. He said a witness told police someone was "needling Dykes about how poorly the team was doing," but police would not confirm that. Fryar said that when he looked again, he saw Dykes on the ground. But Fryar said he did not know what started it. "It started out with Hart Lee and another guy, and it went from there to a whole bunch of people on Hart," Fryar told WHJJ. "I wasn't close enough to hear. I don't know if it would have gone any further if the cops hadn't gotten there when they did. Maybe we wouldn't have made it." Fryar said other patrons didn't come to their aid, possibly, he said, because he and Dykes never had been to the club before. DiBiase said a witness told police Fryar was hit with something like a bat. Another lawyer, Joseph Cavanagh, said Fryar saw "a big guy with a crutch" standing over Dykes. WJAR-TV reported that police questioned a bouncer at the club who was on crutches. After examining Dykes today, Dr. Robert Bahr, an ophthalmologist, said the player should be ready to play in the Patriots' next game - Oct. 18 against Miami. But the Patriots said it was too early to discuss Dykes' status. The 1990 New England Patriots season was the team's 31st, and 21st in the National Football League. It was the first and only season for head coach Rod Rust. The Patriots finished the season with a record of 1–15, the worst record in franchise history. They finished last in the AFC East Division and dead last in the NFL. The roster still had a number of All-Pros and regular contributors from their successful teams of the 1980s, but many of them were past the peak of their career, and the team lacked any young talent to replace them. After the team started 1–1, they would go on to lose their next fourteen games, many in humiliating fashion. Off the field, the team and its management were embarrassed by the harassment of a reporter during a locker room interview. Social/Sharing |
