DescriptionHey all! Been out of touch a bit on CAF the last month (lots of commenting to catch up on!) as time’s been in short supply of late but I’m glad to be back with yet another sweet Black Panther add – my first piece by John Cassaday! Before I get into the piece I wanted to let you all know, if you haven’t seen already, that my bud James (“James S” here on CAF) and I had the pleasure of talking OA shop with Mr. Bill Cox a couple of weeks back on Comic Art Live – it was fun! Take a look at some point if you got a little time to kill. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt_3RJWsmug Alright, on to the art. Saw this piece a while back on Albert Moy’s site and had been going back and forth in my head about picking it up ever since. A few weeks back, it shows up on eBay, and I watched it like a hawk. Hoped it would go for a little bit lower than the original posted price. If around what I was hoping to pay it’d be mine. It was…and it is! Just a great battle image of these 2 heroes. Nice pose choices for both. On BP I like the kind of gradient effect in the inks to highlight the musculature and with Cap I dig those super clean lines that Cassaday does so well. And we know he’s done some killer work on Cap over the years. What’s cool, too, is that BP here is actually T’Challa’s father, T’Chaka, having a…disagreement with Cap prior to Cap’s deep freeze before the Silver Age :) To cap (pun intended) it off, got a very nice head shot of Storm in the background. The published version has her eye and the lightning lit up for a nice effect. Gotta love the tonal work, too. Glad to have checked Cassaday off the list with this one! Now, just need a nice page from his Astonishing X-Men run and I should be set. Should be ;) Social/Sharing |

The pointed shield seems way more dangerous but hard to ricochet a triangle.

Gotta have Cassaday. Love the almost Street Fighter poses/composition on this. Solid addition to an already great BP collection.

The whole thing is awesome, but those tones in Storm's headdress are my favorite part!

I love the idea of a golden age battle between Cap and BP, and it's always cool seeing the triangle shield. Storm's profile really brings the whole image together well. A beautiful cover. Big congrats!

Yeah, I really like the mirror image poses which allows for that part of the composition to be perfectly balanced, and I also like how they are juxtaposed against the Ororo head shot backdrop. As for the shield, I've always been of two thoughts on it. I like it when he's just carrying it and posing for the camera, but I dislike the idea of seeing it in battle, as it wouldn't protect him as well and more importantly, he wouldn't be able to use it as a throwing weapon. Anyway, a really nice addition to your Black Panther collection. Welcome back!

The circle shield is such a classic staple - lots of images pop in my head of Cap using it for defense and offense and the triangle is definitely not as equipped! What I liked here was the overall throwback quality, of the shield as well as the costume. Didn't have a Golden Age Cap image so that was cool, and the fact that he's fighthing T'Challa's dad upped the throwback feel even more. Didn't have a piece featuring him either. And you're spot on regarding that composition! Thanks, Ruben, and all, for the comments - much appreciated as always!

Nice cover indeed. I would also need a Cassaday at some point. I was also considering it, decided not too and I'm glad it landed in your collection.

Oh cool, I'm glad you got this one! I was watching it along with three Spidey pieces and a Venomized Wolverine cover that the same eBayer was selling. I managed to pick up the three Spidey pieces, but backed off of this one. Whenever a BP piece is up for grabs, I imagine that you are probably gunning for it. :) Anyway, it's a fantastic cover, love the composition and the great action poses. Congrats!! Glad to see you back on CAF as well, now leave me some comments! Lol

Congrats on getting the Spideys, Paul! Was looking at one of those too but decided to focus on picking up the BP - glad we both settled ;) I don't gun for EVERY BP piece...but do a lot of them :) Appreciate the comments, man, as always - I may get to leaving some on your pieces at some point. We'll see ;)

This cover was one of my favorites from this great, underrated series. No artist depicts figures in motion more gracefully than John Cassaday. What a talent. What a cover!

Definitely my favorite cover from the run - stoked to now have it! And yeah, this was a short lived series, but had some great story. Agree it's underrated. And graceful is a fitting way to describe Cassaday's renditions! Thanks!

Appreciate that, Nick! Yup several checks made with this one, including as you note, having an example of that killer tonal/shading work Cassaday does so well. A staple of his pinup-y images. Glad you're happy for me - I am too :)

SUCH a gorgeous cover! Congrats on your first Cassaday (it's good you're starting slowly and working your way up... :) ) and - just as everyone else has said - I can't imagine a more perfect home for it to land at. The tonal work on Ororo is the key here for me, but I really love how the shadow feathers out into the leaves of the trees behind Cap and T'Chaka in the past. I also really love the multiple horizons in the piece; Storm is obviously standing on "our ground level", while Cap and the Panther are skewed at an obvious angle. It doesn't feel at all unnatural because of the fact that Ororo's head is tilted and inclined ever so slightly - just enough to make the whole thing seamless. Awesome concept and construction - beautiful, graceful figure work - tremendous execution... Yeah, it's a Cassaday. It's YOUR Cassaday. :) Congrats, buddy!

Yeah, man, it's usually my intent to start slowly, take my time, ease in... ;)
Appreciate the comments, including your observations! Some I hadn't thought of. Love the point around the different horizons not feeling unnatural due to the Ororo's head incline/tilt and the BP vs Cap figure orientation - I can see it now. It's subtle. And subtlety is what good artists do - something works but as the viewer you're not so sure why :)
Thanks, bud!
