Description

This is the last page of issue 1 of the 2 issues mini drawn by Zach Howard.

Zach is probably as far as Mignola’s streamlined approach to (his) art and Hellboy as you can get (save for the deep inks maybe?). And while my love for storytelling pushes me towards the “less is better than too much” on any page as I grow older, Zach saturated approach to his art really resonates with me, especially on those two Hellboy issues. On top of (too?) many details, if you follow his process to his art, you can tell he is putting a lot of thought (and time) into it. To various success according to him (and me) but I still love his (too rare) art.

I bought this one with another page as I had missed out on the pages from the first issue when they were made available. So I was looking out for pages of issue two like a hawk (and still missed out somewhat). But when I purchased the other page, I saw this page from issue 1 being still available and thought it was nice for various reasons.

The main attraction for me was that it features basically the whole active cast of the story. Hellboy, the kid, the evil sorceress, her “major d’homme” and her dog.

It also features bits of scenery and nature whose depiction really impressed me on those two issues. The manor as an old ruin and as what it looked like back when it was in top form by way of an old sepia photograph.

The interior of the house in panel one in which you can tell the house has seen better days. The statue on the far right gives it a bit of a Studio feel as I find it’s an element you could have found in any 70s page/piece by Wrightson, Kaluta or BWS (interestingly, you can see more of it on the OA page than in the book). It may seem like an unnecessary detail but it creates depth and warmth within the scene.

Then we have 2 great panels with Hellboy. The third being a perfect nod to Mignola’s version (the slightly tilted head and jaw?).

The fourth panel is a simple but nice close up on the girl’s eye. I feel that it releases a bit of the tension of the previous ones by creating a stop moment within the rhythm of the page.

Said rhythm escalates again in the final panel as it forebodes of things to come in the next issue. I also love how the black panel borders end up in her long dark air in the end. It creates an almost invisible flow throughout the page and helps the progression of the reader's eye.

I will end by saying that no offence to the (always great) colors by Dave Stewart but Zach Howard’s art works so well in glorious b&w that it really pops in person. And even though I would probably say that about the majority of b&w art, his art should/could really be published in that state.
