Description

The art days of Christmas 2020 is complete with a gift from long time collector and artist Lance Suarez. This is one of my big gets for 2020. When I saw all the nice portrait work posted online during quarantine, I knew I had to get one somehow. With the help of Jim Mee, I was finally able to commission Suarez. While you can get sketchcovers, complete stories, grails, etc. I don't think you can ever get over the first time you appear in comic art form. First appearance of Eric DLS. First appearance of Jonathan Mueller. First appearance of me. A sketchcover that pieces together elements from various convention pictures you can find on CAF if you want to turn this into a scavenger hunt, everything about this was well planned and executed. From picking the right comic blank to the selection of photo references, and the balancing act of how much realism / fantasy to put in, Suarez meticulously chose the most striking and impactful combination to elicit nostalgia of comic cons past and what we missed this year. The figures mirror those of the Star Wars corner box and album cover for Queen II. It features Marcus the Mad Unicorn with the horn lightsaber from SDCC 2013 as Chewbacca, Jonathan and Eric from Steve Morger's Super Con 2009 in San Jose California as Han and Luke, and finally the Hello Kitty head designer for Sanrio from SDCC 2014 as Leia. She even had that cinnabon bun hairstyle. Not merely relying on photo realism, Suarez's inspired choices reflect on his vision of the world with humor, merriment, and a celebration of all things comic con. Stay safe and healthy please.
