DescriptionVenom: First Host Issue 2 page 1Writer: Mike Costa Penciler: Mark Bagley Inker: Andrew Hennessy “My name is Eddie Brock. Our name is Venom.” This page, from Venom: First Host Issue 2 page one. Mark Bagley is perhaps my definitive Spider-Man Artists and maybe one of the all time greats working today. He reminds me so much of my favorite Batman Artist Jim Aparo. His contributions to Spider-Man, Venom, and of course Ultimate Spider-Man are undeniable. I love how inker Andrew Hennessy inked this page. When I was a kid, I thought Venom was cool. I have always liked the inverted version of the hero trope, Bizarro, Reverse Flash, and of course Venom. I remember first discovering the character when I saw a kid reading an issue at Space Camp. I thought his costume was so cool, it was alive!!! My first issue was the final chapter of, “The Mace” miniseries, drawn by the amazing Liam Sharp. I was then not fully introduced to the character and his origin story until I saw him in the 90’s Spider-Man Animated Series, Voiced by the incredible voice actor Hank Azaria (The Simpsons). Originally, Venom was not even a character, but a costume. An alien symbiote that Peter Parker wears after his Spider-Man costume was destroyed during the 1984 Marvel Even Secret War. Venom and his host Eddie Brock were created in 1986 by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane and making his first full debut in Amazing Spider-Man issue 300 (1988). Eddie Brock was an investigative journalist who blamed Spider-Man for the death of his career. After Spider-Man captures a serial killer known as the Sin Eater it’s revealed that Brock published a story announcing the identity of the Sin-Eater was false and the man Brock revealed a compulsive confessor. Embarrassed, with no career and no prospects, a suicidal Brock goes to a church where he encounters the Venom symbiote, who has since been rejected by Peter when it tried to take control. Brock and the Symbiote bond over their hatred of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Since his debut Eddie and Venom has become less of an outright villain and more of an antihero, teaming up with Spider-Man and Peter Parker, reluctant allies but ones with a clear bond. Many have worn the alien symbiote (Eddie Brock, Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, Anne Weying) and the creature itself has spawned several “children” including Carnage, Shriek, Toxin, Scorn, Raze and Sleeper. Initially Eddie Brock was written as a hulking body builder, he was not written as lacking intelligence, but in my reading, he did not have a lot of depth. Since taking over the series in 2018 Donny Cates has made the characters of Venom and Eddie Brock incredibly interesting to me. The depth and melancholy Cates have brought to the character has endeared the character to me in a way I never thought possible. Throughout the run the exploration of Eddie Brock and the Symbiote has been a terrific expansion of the mythology, deftly weaving it into the history of the Marvel Universe and expanding it into many new corners. Knull, The God of the symbiotes and his weapons, the All Black Sword and the Grendel are terrific additions to the story and to the Marvel Universe. Cates has clearly set out to make Venom his own character and move him beyond just a Spider-Man anti-hero and he is doing it with aplomb. Social/Sharing |

Cates has really brought it some new thematic elements in the man/symbiote world! Congrats on a great get!
