DescriptionAside from the cover of ‘Daredevil’ #26 (and I will grant you, that’s a pretty big “aside from”), this is the first image of Matt Murdock or Daredevil in the Maleev / Bendis run.I know, right? I also love that there’s a “backup” pair of glasses for Matt (on the upper right of the page), just in case the Lennon-style lenses didn’t work out, I guess (?)… Considering how central those glasses were to Matt’s look throughout this entire run (and then, by extension, the Netflix series, etc.), it’s pretty incredible to see a point where that choice may not have been cemented yet… Whereas he mostly does all of his comics work digitally now, Alex drew Matt here on a piece of 8.5 x 11 bristol and then scanned that into his computer to combine the foregrounds and backgrounds to finish the pages digitally. These studies (and any others containing the figure drawings of other characters on the page) are the only “paper drawings” that exist for these pages. The large image of Matt was used on the big intro splash of pages 8-9, and the headshot of Matt was used on page 11 (see additional images). Still pinching myself - unable to believe it. Thank you very sincerely, Alex. Social/Sharing |

I dig seeing the process. I'm a big fan of process talk, and this half step is really neat. I think John Buscema did something similar with some of his layouts, where he drew it with everything the inker and colorist would need...Alex is just doing that for himself here. Seeing where he leaves lines out for dark ink, or adds shapes for light source artifacts and glints really brings the art side into focus. And getting the artist to give you a first like that is pretty sweet, too. Congrats!

I remember the Murdock DPS image distinctly from reading the book - Maleev's rendition really did stand out. Congrats!

That's so cool! I love everything about this, from just Matt to the extra glasses and how it's all put together.
