DescriptionMark Buckingham channels his best FF (Fables Framing!) on this page from the fill-in issue he drew during the epic Waid / Wieringo run. The first year of that W/W run was pure fun; sweet, funny stories that focused on the family unit and set the stage for the ‘Unthinkable’ storyline, the consequences of which dramatically shifted the tone and narrative focus of the book for the remainder of that run. This story (the last story / second to last issue before ‘Unthinkable’ kicked off) focused on Ben and Reed clearing out an uninvited guest (while Sue and Johnny were occupied with their own adventure elsewhere), and is well-served by Mark’s splendid rendition of (to my eyes) the classic Kirby / Sinnott ‘Fantastic Four’ stories. Lots of incredible machinery, characters, and clobberin’ cluttering the panels (in the best possible way :) ). So fortunate to be able to display this one. Thank you, Daniel! Social/Sharing |

Fun page with Ben fighting a bug monster. I'm with you on the W/W run ;)

A great, Thing centric page, and how great is it to have a rare FF page drawn by Bucky?!

It's a Kirby 3 panel page. The frame is just brought in slightly to make it look like a full splash. Grandiose and thrilling with the modern take by Buckingham. The 2nd panel is classic Thing. Homage to the Silver Age cleverly done for the tastes of the modern era.

Thanks, Marcus - you're right on (as usual), but I love to study the frames and see which of the panels "bleed over", and into where... For instance, the action of the top frame spills out in all directions... inlcuding down and into the "outside the frame" border of panel 3 (thanks to the big pipe on the right hand side... which looks like some sort of pneumatic mail delivery device to me - although I know they'd never do that to Willy Lumpkin. Maybe it goes between dimensions or something; USPS is still rather new in that arena). Ben's foot is sticking outside of the frame of panel 2... but right above it is the cable that runs into the frame of panel 1... Just really fun to look at and try to wrap your brain around the potential spacial relationships at play. A Buckingham twist on a Kirby three-paneller - right on. Thanks, Marcus (and all) for the comments!

It shouldn't work, but it does. Lots of coincidental tangents by playing with time and camera movement. In the end, it is a thrilling visual experience more than anything.

For those who think Bucky can only do Fables-type illustrations, this is the page I would direct them to. Bucky's style -- detailed yet highly readable -- is the model all artists should strive for. Congratulations on this very memorable page!

That's a really great point, A K. There are elements here that are unmistakably Buckingham (the force of Ben's blow in the top panel, the legs of the bug, something about the hat falling in the lower right corner of panel 1, the monster's claws, etc.), but it's for sure not a Fables page. Really fun to see a modern master at work in a completely different context than what we normally are treated to. Thanks, A K (and everyone)!

"Yer breath stinks worse than the big green bozos...Whatta revoltin' development!" I can just imagine the fun stuff Ben is saying in that last "panel." And speaking of, I really dig how he framed those panels leaving the splashy edge to frame it all. Very clever. Very nice Buckingham and Waid FF page (it's cool that they were even tapped!) Great pick-up, Jason. Congrats!

Does Ben really need a hard hat ;) ?
Great explosive FF page! I like the belly of the beast perspective in panel 2 and that classic facial expression on the last panel!

Classic FF action! I definitely like the technique of framing but not keeping the images to the borders. Really splashy feel without technically being a "splash". This was such a great run - one of the best for FF ever. Congrats!
