A great character design sheet from Super Friends by the legendary Alex Toth.

I've had this one since 2014 or 2015. I bought it from Scott Eder on ebay, and he graciously delivered it to me during the Angouleme festival.

I was not familiar with the character nor have I ever watched Super Friends but I love animation in general as well as felines and I had wanted a nicer example of Toth for some time, so this nicely fit the bill.

While it's commonly recognized that Toth was a genius storyteller, his impeccable sense of (character) design is sometime overlooked.

Just look at this great lion-like character, decades before ThunderCats was born (in fact I was barely a few months old when this was drawn ^^). The similarity between this Lionax character and ThunderCats was also an incentive as I loved that show as a kid (mostly for the amazing opening which was incredibly animated by a Japanese studio whereas the rest of the show was painfully average in that regard).

The hunched pose, the thick line underlining his eyes, the prognathous jaw with the teeth out, the whiskers...there is no doubt he is of feline origin and I love the more rugged look as opposed to the polished over sexiness of our friends the ThunderCats ;)

And yet you can tell that the economy of drawing Toth is known for is here and perfectly adequate and thought out for simplified animation purpose.

And you've got to love all the indications about character and color here in the great Toth letterring.

I really wouldn't mind adding a nice sequential storytelling (horror or war) example by Toth but I've been quite content with this one.

Published in the the Alex Toth by design artbook. It is also one of the 2 or 3 pieces featured in the opening of the documentary "Simplicity : The Life of Alex Toth". How cool is that?

Very cool! Toth was a genius. I agree with your thought that it looks like an early ancestor of Thundercats. And that intro is still one of my favorites. So well done!

I used to watch the Super Friends as a little kid, but don't remember this character. It's possible he only made a single appearance, or maybe the 40+ years of time that have passed since I watched the show have simply eroded my memory. Very nice drawings either way. Lion-O!

To me, this is as good as any panel page. I dig seeing artistic process. Much like Kirby, some artists are amazing draftsmen, and their concept art is just as good (and sometimes better) than other pages of theirs you can buy. Jason Hussa put it so well on another piece of mine, you can see the artists inspiration. And, I LOVED the Thundercats, so this really speaks to me, too. You have a great eye for fine art, FM. Congrats!

I love seeing these Toth designs, model sheet pieces. So cool to see all the notes in addition to the art.
