In Don Maitz's words about the original presented here:
The yellow discoloration is not present in the reproduction. For some reason beyond my knowledge, the masking liquid that prevented the tooth brush spatter to creep into the smoke areas and other regions, reacted to the Bristol paper surface causing the discoloration. As it happens this turned out for me to become one of those happy accidents that so rarely occurs. While I had to remove the yellowish tone for the reproduction, to my taste it adds a bit of eerie magic to the original artwork in a way that I might not have thought to do if this were intended as a two color image.
