Description15" x 10" image area. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Detective Comics #597 Page 13 original art (DC 1989). Eduardo Barreto and Steve Mitchell.I find the evolution of the Batmobile to be a fascinating aspect of the whole Batman story. Seeing the various iterations of the car over the years is quite revealing of the times. The imagery of the Batmobile could serve as a litmus indicator of the current state of the real world. In the best of times, it was such a curvy, creative, cool car. In the sterility of the late 1980's when American automobiles were becoming ugly, computer-laden steel boxes on wheels, even the Batmobile did not escape the tragedy. This comic issue shows what I think, is the lowest point for the Batmobile, reflecting the lowest of lows in the U.S. auto industry. It looks like Grandma's grocery-getter embellished with a massive 80's-era deck spoiler and large screen on-board computer, but that trapezoidal steering wheel was cool. This moment in Batmobile history is further shown here http://www.batmobilehistory.com/1989_597-batmobile.php. Social/Sharing |

Oh yeah, that was a horrific Batmobile! The tall spoiler on that sharply angular, crappy car? What was Batman thinking? Still a blast from the past though!

Ha! Yeah, that Hot Wheels ended up in the sand box instead of the window sill. Chalk that design right up there with Superman's mullet ;)
Cool retro page though!
