Description2nd of 2 Panther posts this week! This one from the title’s long running art team of the late ‘90s/early 2000s in penciller Sal Velluto and inker Bob Almond! Awesome 3 years they had (OK, I sound like Yoda there) providing the pictures to Chris Priest’s words! This is my first Dueling Dealer win, courtesy of Anthony Snyder. It was funny. I wasn’t watching the show and I got pinged by 3 or 4 guys straight away saying “Hey K – there’s a BP piece on DD”. Yes! My plan to establish a network of collectors to look out for BP art for ME is now complete! Now I sound like Vader. Sweet page here with some detailed illustration AND inks. Big 4 panel layout with a vs image at the top left followed by a nice head shot of M’Baku. But the featured image is that bottom left one. Great pose and isn’t it just cool to see the Black Panther against a completely all black backdrop?! Gotta love how his claws are glistening, too. I mean, you’d think M’Baku, after seeing this, would be thinking “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” ;) I was not planning on the Star Wars references. Just kinda started. And I recognize that last one was a stretch. Maybe it’s May the 4th having just passed. Anyway... Fun bonus is having that Kirby looking BP in that last panel. Won’t get into details, but yeah, this is a multi-Panther story. AND my first and only other Velluto piece (for now!) is a splash which is literally the page right before this one. Check it out here if you haven’t: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1526185 Thanks, Bill for hosting, Anthony for selling, and my fellow collectors for notifying moi to jump on this! Velluto and Almond are still my favorite Black Panther art team. The Kirby-style Panther they used was a great mix of styles.

Oh, you're doing Star Wars themed on this:
“Just for once, let me look on your artwork with my own eyes.” — Anakin Skywalker
“Try not. Claim15-Dino or do not Claim15-Dino. There is no try.” —Yoda
“Great page, kid, don’t get cocky.” —Han Solo
“Once you start down the dark path of comic art collecting, forever will it dominate your destiny.” —Yoda
“A friendly piece of advice; assume that I know everything.” —Moff Gideon or Albert Moy

Ha ha, yes, love it! Star Wars fan, I assume?! I'm thinking those rolled off your fingertips WAY too easy :)

Congrats on having your minions scouring the planet for BP art! Haha! It is nice to have a network like that to be sure, and what a great catch as a result! Man oh man, I am totally mesmerized by the inks on this one! That third panel....yowza! But all four panels are fantastic. And thanks for including a link to the preceding splash page. That is a gem as well.

What a win! Imagine what Anthony might have hidden down in his drawer and just not show it. Congrats

Absolutely brilliant page that even I was tempted to enter my claim on! I, of course, was one of the many who the split second this hit the screen, thought "Kahlil!". Now I'm sure you must be thinking "But Rubén, if you thought about me instantly, why didn't you text me about it like all the other guys?", and to that I can simply say that I WANTED to text you, but seeing as I don't own a cell phone and haven't owned one or even used one since 1998, I had no way of texting you and even if my wife's phone had been sitting beside me at the time, I wouldn't even know how to turn it on, let alone know how to send a text. But the message you should be taking away from this, is that I thought of you! 🥰

Ummm...what I'm taking away is...you don't have a cell phone?! Huh?! ;) OK, I'm sure you have a valid, thought-through reason, as I dig many of your thought-through comments on CAF. So I'll leave it alone, lol. And I do appreciate you thinking of me! What's the saying? "It's the thought that counts." True enough. But think about that same thought WITH the action afterward! For example, noticing a BP piece up for sale on DD.... ;) Thanks, man!

Well, let me just say that I DID consider typing out a letter, putting a stamp on it (I keep them on hand for Burkey payments) and dropping it in the mailbox after the Duelling Dealers show ended, but I was afraid you wouldn't receive it in time to put your claim in.
There's a new place that just opened down the street specializing in carrier pigeons. If this situation happens again, I might just try them out!

Our journey to the Black Panther side is complete! You can never reference Star Wars too much. I love how the panels are all just a little off. That, and the clever inking choices, make the battle images really pop. And that next to last panel...you'd have to be a nerf herder not to like that one. I think you need to practice some Jedi mind tricks, too, and all these pages will be yours. "These are not the Black Panther pages you're looking for." Big congrats!

I didn't notice how the panels being slightly off contribute - good callout. And I hear you on the Jedi training front. It's been tough. I keep going to how I can use my growing powers to get more BP OA. "But master, I want it ALL". "Control, you must learn control!" Then he goes on with some other stuff about a path to the dark side or something. I'm like "the DARK side to more BLACK Panther art?! Makes sense. Sign me up!" ;) Thanks, J!

Beautiful page, such powerful Storytelling and I also love the Kirby'esque Panther in the last panel, it's like a subtle "window to the past"... Huge congrats!

Another awesome Velluto page for you, sir! I think you know the preceding splash page is one of my favorites in your collection, and am so glad you were able to add this one, too... Congrats on reconstructing a sequence! Like your outstanding new Garney page that you just posted, the "Black Panther on a black background" elements of both of these two new postings are big-time winners. An excellent (and very eye-catching) compositional choice! Congrats on the beautiful page, sure, but of even greater significance is the network of eyes you have on your side, scouting out gems like these! :) "Many Bothans pinged you to bring you this information..."

The OA commenting force is STRONG with you, Hussa. But...wait...uh oh. You wrote "Garney" when you meant "Frenz". Phone auto-correct, maybe? I hope so ;) Seriously, thanks for the great add, as always, man! And you like the network build, eh?! Well, it was never my intention. "A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one." :) Thanks!

Fabulous BP page by Velluto and Almond! Love the layout here and the inks are phenomenal! That lower left shot of Black Panther is a panel screaming to be a splash all on its own!

I know Black Panther has Kirby written all over him, but when I think of the character, my mind immediately goes to this run by Priest and Velluto. This page has so much going for it - big congrats!

For me personally, this may be the most memorable Black Panther page in existence. I've said elsewhere that Priest's Black Panther series is one of the best things to come out of Marvel in the past quarter century, and this page may be one of the best from that run. Why is that? I have no other explanation other than to say that the bottom left panel was seared into my memory when I first saw it two decades ago, and seeing the OA now was a jolt to my synapses, bringing me back to the moment in my old apartment in Oceanside when I first flipped to this page. I can't think of a better compliment for Velluto and Almond than to say they created an image that remained so sharply with me despite the thousands of other comic books I've crammed into my brain over the years.

That's a helluva endorsement, man! I do think one of the best things about comics and OA is how an image just instantly resonates and sticks, and you don't necessarily know why. You think about, and can often figure it out, but that initial BANG...you just know you like what you saw and that's it. I wondered why Velluto/Almond used an all black background in the bottom left. Obviously stands out, in a great way. I'm lucky to actually have this page and the splash prior to it. Thanks, Michael!

I love that you got Looney Tunes Panther (and his mighty powers of ESP!) in that last panel haha. I love the Marvel Knights era and Priest's Black Panther was one of its best parts. Great page from a really great run.
