Description

This one has been a long time coming...

Pierre Joubert is one a top illustrators of children books whose career lasted from the 1930's to the 1990's. His output is supposedly numbering over 10 000 drawings and paintings. Despite this, very few of his works find their way on the market. With only 3 sketches he had drawn for me when we met in the early 1980's, I had grown accustomed to the idea that would be it.

But then, the opportunity arose to acquire a prime period gouache painting, and so...

This one perfectly encapsulates all that Pierre Joubert is about: childhood and adventure set up in a historical ans seafaring environment. All this with an extraordinary sense of optimism and purpose, highlighted by the bright color palette.

The expression on the ship boy's face, all tanned and ready to share all that he's lived through during those months at sea with the little girl who was waiting for him, is priceless...
