Description

What's the absolute limit on coolness per panel? Because I think we might be approaching it here... It just now occurs to me that Kamandi was an almost all-male book. The main supporting cast members are Ben Boxer, Dr Canus and Prince Tuftan. Perhaps in Jack's mind this was a kid book, like Boy's Ranch or Newsboy Legion, and occupied a more boyish place in his creative psyche. Here, near the end of his run, he is introducing an important feminine character, Pyra, though she's really a genderless alien energy being.

Every panel is a showcase on its own of Kirby greatness. The Berry inks are gorgeous on the faces and energy waves!

Wait. Add this. Carry the one...nope, you've exceeeded your coolness limit! This things gonna blow! I loved Kirby's work on Kamandi. So wildly creative. And you have done sweet Kirby machinery, you. Awesome find. Big congrats!

The composition is just so clever - mixing it all up, from the greatly symmetric, central Kamandi figure in the first panel to almost being pushed off the page by the rays in the last panel. Wonderful storytelling from the King - amazing page!

According to Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld is no different than Jack Kirby. I beg to differ, and pages like this (and all other Kirby pages, for that matter) just serve to prove my point. Jack just never got a gig hawking bluejeans.
