Description

Here's an interesting piece of history. This page is from the first full published story by George Perez, from October 1974. His one previous credit was a 2 page Deathlok feature in Astonishing Tales #25, two months earlier.

Rich Buckler starting laying out this story when he was assigned other work, so he gave it to Perez to do the finished pencils. Inking and pencil tones were done by Duffy Vohland, who only had a weekend to finish this. According to a Perez interview in Modern Masters #2, Vohland had his friends John Byrne and Bob Layton assist with the inking. I have no idea if either of them ever touched this page or not.

Unfortunately, the story and art really suffered from last minute creator changes and deadlines and the pencil tones mostly didn't reproduce in the printed version. This ended up being Gullivar Jones's last Marvel appearance after a string of nice stories in Creatures on the Loose #16-21 and Monsters Unleashed #4.

Always a treat to see George Perez work, and this early effort shows us a glimpse of what was to come. In the vein of the sword and sorcery genre, the emphasis on faces, figures and robes were crucial. This carried over so well to his later works and carried him to legendary status.
