Description

The other Sandman book. Sandman Mystery Theatre was for mature audiences and mature I was not. Nonetheless, I was attracted to its borrowing of Golden Age comics, lurid pulp novels, and film noir that made up this series. And to be honest, Guy Davis drew a hella cool Golden Age Sandman! Here is a nice example of Wesley Dodds in costume, a fire escape shot, and vintage car. Not to mention Dian Belmont is in it too! Thanks to Roger K. for the hookup and for providing the great scan!

Great page from a great series.  This book is gem from what I consider Vertigo's golden age.

What a great page! The headlight art is very interesting to see.

Davis is just getting into the groove here!  Wonderful illustrative pulp feel all throughout!  Every line has a purpose and wavelength connecting it to a time of the past.  The flare of the headlamps with the screen tone going at and angle makes the art and the published page look good.

The older I get the more I appreciate this kind of story and art.  Less pow boom razzle dazzle, more enigma, melancholy, wonder.  Congratz !!

Same here! I forgot to write that what appealed to me about SMT was that it was unlike the Marvel and DC housestyle at the time. It was so non-90s; and yet, looking back, it's now very much 90s!

The older I get the funnier I find fish slapping.

Beautiful work by Guy Davis. Love the flow from one panel to another! And that opening panel is my favorite!
