DescriptionAnother great piece I picked up during Ruben DaCollector's live art drop four weeks ago. Here we have a fantastic image of the Thing as he echoes a sentiment I think we have all felt since this pandemic hit us. In this case, the Thing has lost his temper once more thinking about how he returned from Battleworld to find that his long time girlfriend Alicia Masters is now in a relationship with the Human Torch. This jam-packed and poignant issue alternates between the Thing's memory flashbacks and interactions with Johnny and Reed in the present, both ending poorly -- in fact, the conversation with Reed brings to light a highly disturbing revelation that leads to a fight between the long-time friends, resulting in the Thing storming off and deciding he is finished with the Fantastic Four forever! Yeah, life in the age of COVID can be a real bummer at times. But scoring a nice splash like this one sure helps to brighten things up. Congrats buddy!

Ron Wilson was THE Ben Grimm artist of the 1980s, as demonstrated by this page.

That's life
-That's life-
That's what all the people say
You're riding high in April, shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune
When I'm back on top, back on top in June

Great grumpy Thing splash! Signed by both artists as well. I love the little details in the room, the sporting trophies, the cigars, the oversized boots and the worn, crumpled coats in the wardrobe. The picture of a rocket (the one from their ill-fated flight?) and the penant at the top for 'Stan Lee presents' all create a sense of a life trapped between a succefful college past and an awkward, unwanted present. Lovely page!

Not much of a heroes welcome for Benjy from Battleworld...It could've read "Love stinks!", too. What an arc here, as you said. This was a big turning point in the Thing's story, sending him to some frustrating places. Is it any wonder why we love the character? This is a Fantastic splash by Wilson and Layton, as you'd expect. Another great Rubén pick-up! Congrats!

Ron Wilson's version of the Thing is one of the most memorable to me along with Byrne's, Perez', and Kirby. So easily recognizable and consistently drawn. Outstanding title splash man!

Just a great opening title splash and if you wanted a prime Ben Grimm example you could do much worse! That starting line, "Life Stinks" is totally Ben...and regardless, on the flip side he always see the bright side, makes the most of things, and always helps out others despite the "stinkier" times :) That's the thing with the Thing. Congrats, man!
