DescriptionI have a soft spot for big cats by Jones, and here's one that's been stalking me for a couple years as it changed hands and was up in public places for sale. I finally broke down and grabbled it.Nice to have something inked by this artist and I really like the feel of this one. The extremely relaxed pose, tired eyes, and distant birds are a great contrast to the energetic lines in the tail and fur. Great textures in the shadows as well. There's a lot in this for such a simple piece. This was published in the Jeffrey Jones Sketchbook (2000), on the facing page of the other big cat drawing I have up on CAF, as it happens. The loose lines are able to perfectly portray the relaxed feel of the lion. Such a beautiful sketch! Huge congrats!

Sometimes, the art just seems to be smarter than we are. Most of my purchases are no-brainers. But every so often, there are those borderline decisions that I have to think about. What's funny is how those same pieces keep popping to say, "hey, remember me?" After a while I usually get the hint. Anyway, I like the feel of this too. Something very "casual" about it, and I don't necessarily mean the lion's state of repose. The drawing itself is very casual. This isn't something where you can imagine the artist hunched over his drawing board working on. More like a relaxed, lazy afternoon, pad of paper on the lap, kind of drawing. And yes, so masterful in its simplicity.

Jeff was one of those rare artists that could convey so much with so little.

Jones cats are indeed a great thing! I like Jones' big cats even more than frazettas!

Normally I'm not a fan of stalkers, but I'll make an exception in this case.

A masterpiece. Reminds me of a sketch of a lion done by Rembrant. Not a swipe mind you, just that is so good. Congrats.

A drawing that can tell you more about the artist than the subject. This is Jones' thoughts upon seeing this lion and put on paper without trying to make it beautiful or refined. It is an exercise in having raw artwork filtered through initial impressions and shows the talent that has enthralled fans and contemporaries.

Both of your cat sketches are sublime. Jones had a once in a generation magic touch.

This cat looks similar to the cat statue in the Jeffrey Jones Tarzan oil painting, Sands of Time.

You're right! Hadn't noticed that before. Jones has a very characteristic way of drawing big cats, and lions in particular, but there are even more commonalities between this sketch and the lion in that painting, such as the monolithic body, tired facial expression, and the curving triangular main shape. The main almost looks like a sail.

This is a nice example of Jeffrey's mastery during this particular period. One of the many rich and varied artistic periods of his storied career.

This is art pared down to the most elegant of essentials.

A sign of great artists, that they can take a serene scene and balance it with gravity and etherality. Nice!
