DescriptionDave Cockrum returned to some of his most iconic characters in this storyline, which was originally intended to run in Marvel Comics Presents. I have several other splashes from this series and was delighted to add this to my collection. This was the second to last page of the series and led up to the classic Claremont/Lee X-Men #275 as the Starjammers fought to help Lilandra retake the Sh'iar empire back from her sister Deathbird. In this somewhat silly storyline, Deathbird had stolen some of the Phoenix Force's power from Rachel Summers and after she was defeated, they used this device to bring back Charles Xavier from near death. As a result, he temporarily had Phoenix powers and was given a similar outfit to wear while fighting with the team. Thankfully this didn't last past this issue and I don't think it was ever mentioned again. The pages is signed by inker Jeff Albrecht. No offense to Albrecht, but I do think Cockrum's pencils on this series would have benefited from a more compatible inker, such as Joe Rubinstein. This art was used again more recently (with some editing) for the inside front cover of the 2019 X-Men:Starjammers trade paperback. Social/Sharing |

Looks as good as the cover with this much action and Corsair leading the charge! The Phoenix Force sure likes telepaths with figures that can rock the sash.

Fun Fact: I was going to bid on this and then thought to myself, "Ah shit, Ted definitely loves and wants this more than I do so all I'm going to do is bid him up. Forget it, I'll let him have it as cheaply as possible.". But I've done that several times on Cockrum art for those same reasons. I just wish people would do that for me when they're about to bid on any Tom Grummett art! 😜

Thanks Ruben! I definitely avoid bidding on most Grummett and particularly Superman art -- although admittedly it's not really sometihng I collect :)

Agree with the inking, but still an extremely fun series. Congrats on another great example!

Nobody could draw the Starjammers better than their creator. There's a reason why Dave Cockrum is a legend. Phenomenal page!

Very nice. Jeff did a good job over Dave. I wonder what happened to Jeff?
