DescriptionJACK KIRBY and MIKE ROYER original artwork for In the Days of the Mob #2 "Murder Inc!" (DC, 1972-1974-2013) I love this piece! Mob #2 was done at the time of a career peak of quality for Kirby, Kirby's slashing marks are fierce and bold and the figures are often distorted to frightening effect. Mike Royer says: "I think it's the best work I ever did on Jack, because his pencils were so good, and the stories were so neat.." This original art is part of the first story of Mob #2 entitled "Murder Inc!", published in 1974 in the magazine "Amazing World of DC Comics" #1. In 2013 the complete book was published. ________________________________________________________________________________________ "In the days of the mob" è un magazine ideato da Jack Kirby per la DC Comics che aveva l’obiettivo di raggiungere un pubblico adulto. Purtroppo la rivista chiuse con il primo numero, inchiostrato da Vince Colletta, mentre il secondo, con le chine di Mike Royer, è rimasto in parte inedito fino al 2013, anno in cui la DC ha finalmente deciso di stampare tutte le tavole in un unico volume dove poter ammirare uno dei lavori più maturi e autentici di Jack Kirby che ha vissuto, in prima persona, il periodo della grande depressione e del fenomeno del gangsterismo. Il lavoro per Mob n.2 è stato svolto al momento del picco di qualità della carriera di Kirby, qui i segni sono feroci e audaci e le figure sono spesso distorte con effetti spaventosi. Personalmente trovo questo lavoro semplicemente fantastico, sarà anche per la libertà che si è preso Kirby nel realizzare quest'opera, compreso i testi. Mob è stato uno dei primissimi albi inchiostrati da Mike Royer per Kirby, successivamente Royer disse: "Penso che sia il miglior lavoro che abbia mai fatto su Jack, con matite così belle..". CURIOSITA': questa tavola originale fa parte del primo racconto di Mob n.2 dal titolo "Murder Inc!" pubblicato già nel 1974 sulla rivista "Amazing World of DC Comics" n. 1. In questa occasione vennero modificati i balloons probabilmente applicandone dei nuovi sugli originali, col tempo si sono staccati mostrando nuovamente gli originali con i classici segni di ingiallimento della colla. (ho allegato la pubblicazione del 1974 e anche del 2013) La tavola è composta da 4 grandi pannelli privi dei classici contorni alle vignette ed occupa praticamente tutta la superficie del foglio 40 x 29. Concordo con la tua descrizione: un lavoro davvero magistrale e affascinante su un tema che evidentemente aveva molto colpito Kirby nella sua giovinezza. Splendida pagina!

Prime Kirby art! He's coming to DC from Marvel and goes all out in B&W magazine format that he also wrote from his memories of the bygone 30's gangland. A revival of crime comics from his days with Joe Simon, this is done in magazine form, so there was freedom to show the grisly end for criminals. All the chiseled faces of tough guys that were on the good and bad side of the law!

Yep, this is peak Kirby & also a fond return to the S&K crime comics heyday.

I loved this stuff! Check out the little details, like the crook in panel two using his finger for a toothpick. Kirby is noted for bombast, but he was just as great at rendering naturalistic body language and visual nuances that add color like this to his characters.
