Description

This piece was probably done to accompany an article in The London Graphic during the nineteenth century. Cleaver would have been about twenty at this time. You can see how he is beginning to capture characters and setting. A beautiful little early work.

Beautifully captures all the fashion and gallantry of this gala. It is meant to provide the ideal picture of what went on and favorably fill in what the prose could not adequately describe.

Marcus, I think I prefer these to the photography which supplanted it. Those amazing illustrators had to be storytellers as well. Cleaver only got better as the years went by.
