DescriptionTin Hats Wartime Daily Comics Panel Undated Original Art (Bell Syndicate, Inc., 1940s).An American soldier nabs a Japanese. A superior demands: "Wait! You've captured one of their M.P.'s! Throw him back, before you bring aid an' comfort to the enemy!" Tin Hats Wartime Daily Comic Strip Panel Original Art dated 2-25-43 (Bell Syndicate, Inc., 1943). "Aw, relax, Sarge! Break down an' admit it's a very cute gag!" Stanton gained youthful momentum with the 1942-44 run of Tin Hats as a morale-booster feature. His dedication to the craft led to formal art-schooling, complicated by a 1947-66 affiliation with the bondage-erotica publisher Irving Klaw. Comics scholar Ger Apeldoorn cinched the connection in 2013 between Tin Hats and Stanton's notorious S&M cartoons of the midcentury. The signature matches between the far-removed genres. Tin Hats' comparative sophistication invites consideration of Stanton as a teenage prodigy. In terms of subject-matter, Tin Hats bears a kinship to the World War II documentarylike cartoons of Bill Mauldin, and to Milton Caniff's sustained show of humorous respect for foot-soldiers in Male Call. 1. The gag being that it's Hirohito they captured without knowing it. Stanton does this caricature tighter as the focus of the drawing over the rest of the scene.
