Description

Thanks to luck and good fortune (to say nothing of the immense patience of Nick’s awesome art rep, Felix Lu), I’m thrilled to add another Derington ‘Batman Universe’ page to my gallery and build out a two-page sequence!

I really enjoy the framing of the conversation in the top three panels, with the incredibly rich details of panel 1 (and the amazing shot of King Nnamdi) leading into the sparity of panels 2 and 3; deliberately sparse, save for the stripe on the wall in the background to establish eye-lines and a sense of relative scale. Beautiful work. Including the page before this one, it’s a six-panel conversation before it’s off to the races in panels 4 and 5 as Batman and the Gorillas explode into action (with the story installments being only twelve pages long; space was tight…! :) )

Originally published in 12-page installments in issues of the 2018 Walmart-exclusive ‘Batman Giant’ comics (starting in issue #3), ‘Batman Universe’ collected the chapters into six 24-page issues. This was originally in 'Batman Giant' #6 as page 11, but was later used as 'Batman Universe' #2, p. 22.

Thank you once again for everything, Felix!

I still remember your first, another masterclass of a page right here, man! Bats looks best when he's mid-run, and none the worse with his big pal running alongside...

"First to the Batmobile gets to drive today." ;) You really could caption the first two panels with all kinds of stuff for some fun. I love the reactions on this page. Very cool sequence to have, for sure. I like Derington's Batman design a lot, and his work on this page is really nice. You can see his process, which you might know I dig. The fourth panel is especially killer. Great sequence to snag! "There's a Black Friday sale on tights at Target..." Let's goooooo!

Great page from a wonderful story. Those two on a Batman book was pure magic. I own the following page. Love Gorrilla City stories and nothing like a sleeping Riddler in the throne.

Well, this was a Derington world
Art from Felix’s
Bruce couldn't help thinkin'
That there was a riddle more to apes somewhere else

After all, Gorilla’s great big world
With lots of Walmarts to run to
And if he had to try drawin'
Nick had one guy in Bendis he was gonna keep

O yeah, all right
Take it claimy, Nnamdi
Monkey last all night
This is a Derington world

As always, a new art post from you also doubles as a quick lesson in Comic Art 101. These efforts you put forth, assuming they are read and yes, we know most don't bother to take the few moments needed, serve to teach comic art fans and collectors simple lessons about sequential storytelling, which then furthers the appreciation for this wonderful art form. Each description is an invaluable nugget of gold wisdom which further enhances the artistic knowledge of any and all who are willing to simply follow along and look at what you are describing. Kudos to you, my friend. Oh, and a very lovely page indeed!

Fun page. The first panel is pitch perfect with that tilted head.

I like that in panels 2 & 3, he clearly drew them on a different stage, indicating who is king and who is not.

(I would have drawn the ears in panel in the second one to make him more recognizable. But it's not like there is any doubt so that's nitpicking ;)

Lovely Derington Batman page. Such a fun story and although that 4th panel is fantastic, love the 1st so much.

Easily one of the best Batman stories of the last decade. Everything about this was fun and Derington was the perfect artist for this.

Derington's ability to convey so much of what's going on from the facial expressions and body language of an ape goes to show how much talent the man possesses.
