DescriptionOperation Ivy poster design artwork by Jim Mahfood. My final post from art pickups at NYCC 2021! A major highlight of the convention for me was chatting with Jim at his booth as he is one of my favorite artists. Was also happy to pick up this Op Ivy piece, my 2nd music related piece in the collection (both by Jim!). This piece was printed and used as a massive poster displayed at a bar in Las Vegas called Jammyland and was also sold separately as a print. The design is based off the album cover to an Op Ivy compilation album called "Seedy" released in 1996 through Karma Kredit Records, well after the band had broken up. Back in the mid 90s I was discovering a lot of punk rock music (among other genres) and eventually came across Operation Ivy's debut album at a local record store and I was drawn in to their energy, message, and attitude. The band was stylistically important as one of the first bands to mix the elements of hardcore punk and ska into a new sub-genre, ska punk. The lyrics and tone of Operation Ivy's music portrayed a vehement desire for social justice and a strong distrust of mainstream conformist culture. Operation Ivy was formed in May 1987 and was named after the code name of a 1952 American nuclear weapons testing program. They would only be active for 2 years, breaking up in May 1989 after releasing a debut 7 inch EP "Hectic" and debut full length album "Energy" through Lookout Records. They officially released 28 tracks (with 4 additional tracks circulating through bootlegs) and performed 185 shows. Operation Ivy is well remembered as the direct precursor to the popular band Rancid (Two of the Op Ivy band members Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman went on to become founding members of Rancid, and they both remain members of the band to present day) and for wielding a lasting stylistic influence over numerous other bands in what became the third wave ska movement. Thanks again, Jim! Song Choice: Operation Ivy - "Knowledge" Social/Sharing |

We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us to a record shop
We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said he don't work here
We said if you don't got Mojo Nixon then your store could use some fixin'

I have to wonder if their music ever even made it this far north, cuz I've never even heard of this band. But I did any and all music related illustration. Nice piece, dude!

Not sure about that although Canadians who were super into Punk Rock during the 90s may have found a way to seek them out. You have heard of Rancid though yes? 2 of the founding members of that band were part of Op Ivy and are still part of Rancid to this day, they were much more commercially successful than Op Ivy was, but not as groundbreaking/influential to other punk bands (arguably).

I never listened to their stuff, but yes, I'm aware of Rancid. As you say, I suppose their lack of widespread success is why I never heard of the precursor band.

Great piece, and I agree, Jim Mahfood is a great guy and fun to meet. I just set up a pre-con commission from him, music related, for ECCC that I'm excited for.

MAH-FOOOOOOOD!!! Nice score Kavi. Do you know if this is part of the giant wall collage or a separate piece hanging at Jammyland? I don't go downtown very often, but the next time I do I will drop in and try and snag a pic on the wall for you.

thanks Jeff!! Honestly those part of the details are a bit fuzzy from my convo with Jim a month ago at the convention...could be either lol. Collage sounds like it might be right but I don't know for sure
