Description

Well, here's a find. This is the first page of the first Nanny Dickering article from 'Cracked Mazagine' by her original artist, John Severin, years before she was taken over by Bill Ward and transformed into the tall, leggy, busty blonde we all know so well.

In fact, this original version of Nanny Dickering (named after journalist Nancy Dickerson), is drawn with the features of Juliet Mills. You see, Mills was then appearing on TV as the co-star of 'Nanny and the Professor'. (She was "Nanny".)

I think Severin got the script, saw the name and found the first reference for "Nanny" that he could get his hands on. After a couple more outings drawing her based on Mills, he would draw her radically differently from appearance to appearance and other artists would handle her completely differently, in their own style, until Ward came along and finalized her look.

You will note that this page has seen better days. There is a lot of handling damage, warping, dialogue is peeling and (most obvious of all) an entire panel is missing. Where did it go? Who knows? I'd love to find it some day, but that seems unlikely. I've included a close-up of it in case anyone has seen it about somewhere.

What is also great about owning the first Nanny is that I own the complete *last* Nanny story, from 'Cracked No. 363' by Noel "Scotch" Anderson.

The circle is complete. These John Severin drawings defined the look of Cracked and gave it a flavor of humor and artistry you could depend on every issue.
