Description

15" x 10" image area. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. From Beyond the Unknown #8 page 12 original art (DC, 1970). Murphy Anderson pencils and inks. From the Murphy Anderson Collection.

Looking more like it was crafted in 1940 rather than 1970, the ink and imagery on this page is pure eye candy. The art first drew me in but I put a great deal of value on the story, as I think we should. After all, this is narrative art, right? The narration and building tension of each panel playing out is superb, right down to the moment we realize an alien (good one) picks up a primitive Earthly weapon, and kills his own kind (bad one) to save the humans. This is a powerful page!

Anderson could have had a career doing covers for the pulps if he'd been born a little earlier. You're right that this looks like it could have been done 30 years before it was illustrated, which I mean as praise in this case.

Another beautiful page! That 3 panel, gun down sequence is comic book storytelling at its finest!
