Description

Tales to Astonish #44 p8 Kirby Origin and First Appearance of the Wasp, one of the founding Avengers. This page shows some interesting technique from Jack Kirby, with a close-up and silhouette of Janet Van Dyne for dramatic effect. The murder of her father prompts her to contact Henry Pym for help. What's interesting to me is the contempt Pym shows for her may foreshadow the future of their troubled relationship. "Those bored society playgirls are all alike. But it's pretty gruesome for her to get her kicks by making up a horror story about her father."

It's so interesting to see the faint pencils on the silhouette panels.  Kirby gives a consummate performance to define Silver Age Marvel.  It proudly shows the imaginative power put into each property he worked on.   The contempt for women was seen here and in FF with Reed for Sue as these egghead science guys were too busy to know what's good for them.  Not uncommon as Stan was trying to appeal to young boys and reflected the times where woman's lib was just starting to gain more momentum.

You've been holding out on us, Andy.  Brilliant story-telling in those first three panels and a wonderful add to your collection!

Thanks so much Mark!  I'm at least 75% done getting things up on CAF. I find the whole curating process time-consuming but very rewarding. I find trying to place each piece within the characters' story arcs is very satisfying - and that also helps guide the pieces I look for.

Different Mark here...love the top tier on this piece of history...I also enjoy figuring out how best to present my collection and also find, as you mention, it does inform buying decisions.

Love this story & envious that you have a page from it! The silhouette though, is likely Don Heck's decision. He used that technique quite often.

Kirby dynamics with a touch of that Heck elegance! The second panel is priceless! Well done!

Key page from an iconic origin and first appearance. The emotion in that top tier is absolutely amazing!!

I LOVE Jack Inked by Don!!!  Two of my very fave Vintage Marvels is this and TTA #49.  Me and Dave Stevens had our own little Elite Club:  Don Heck is Jack's Best Inker...  Dave even made a couple of hand-made Member Cards...  kinda in jest, but hey...
