DescriptionI'm as fond of the "Reckless" books as I am of Phillips and Brubaker's amazing "Criminal" series, and Destroy All Monsters is my favorite Reckless volume so far. Among other things, this story focuses on the relationship between Ethan and Anna, his partner in investigation & revenge, and it includes Anna's origin story. Here we see Ethan running headlong into his burning movie theater to save Anna. It's fun to have the first page in most comics, but I grabbed this one mainly because of the mood, textures, and atmospherics. The establishing shot of the theater marquee that appears in some form in each volume is great, as is the pair of projectors standing sentinel in the middle panel as smoke billows, and the abstract form of our hero as he enters at the bottom is terrific, IMO. Lots of lost edges and ink on the page, as I like it. Another tip of the hat to Mark Hay for getting these pages to me in great shape. Thanks for taking a look! Social/Sharing |

Did he blueline "FIRE" to himself to ink fire? The smoke opens up the story with an incident that brings us along for the ride.

Ha! I guess the bluelined chapter headings could serve as "notes to self" for the artist to remember to render the inferno etc., but their main purpose is for the reader --- I've attached a snap of the page as published. Thanks as always for commenting early and often!

Great stuff. Have you read all the Criminal and Reckless books? I just started Criminal but have heard great things.

I think I can honestly say that I have read everythinkg Brubaker and Phillips have produced: Scene of the Crime, Sleeper, Ingognito, Fatale, The Fade Out, Kill or Be Killed, My Heros Have Always Been Junkies, Pulp, etc., but the best of these for my money is Criminal (and my fav Ciminal stories are "Bad Night", "The Last of the Innocent", "Savage Swords of Criminal" and "Deadly Hands of Ciminal", but they're all superb) and now Reckless. I love all three of trhe Reckless books, with the 3rd (Destroy All Monsters) being my favorite so far, but there's another one coming out soon...

I worked in a movie theater for like 2 months shy of 10 years. This story, especially this part, killed me. I miss the hell out of that job.

I never worked in the theater myself, but I think there is a strong common feeling of mystery, excitement, and familiarity most of us have for that environment. Each of Brubaker & Phillips's series takes place in its own universe, and part of what I love about the Reckless stories are that they're set in what is already a vintage/defunct theater way back in 80s era California. What better place for drama to unfold, and for the characters to cocoon themselves from normal life?
