DescriptionI've been a fan of Steven Grant's X character since his early 90s debut in Dark Horse's Comics Greatest World run. I collected the first series (which ran for 25 issues) and was into it.X is dark and mysterious and the world he inhabits is grimy, dank and dangerous. The character is a bit Punisher-esque but maybe a little more rough around the edges. The first five issues of X also features some early art by the great Doug Mahnke, including this cover. Mahnke - Palmiotti - X. It's a perfect combo and just a great rendition of the character, solo, coming out of a fire. Thanks to tavole originale for this and glad I finally decided to grab it while it was still available. I think one down side of X may be his name though, in retrospect. As cool as it is it wasn't internet conscious at the time - in the days of web surfing for original art or comic book characters try just typing X and see what comes up... Social/Sharing |

I'm pretty sure they named the title X so it could be placed next to the top selling X-Men books. Nothing to do with the black leather mask and tight black suit. Maybe.
As for the art, this is very cool 90's Mahnke and Palmiotti fully enveloping scene with the wall of flames and the cape that looks to be elevated from just the heat!

X calmly walking out of an explosion makes a lot more sense than, say, Dabney Coleman (see Cloak & Dagger, 1984). This image really tells you who X is.
