I first learned of Lesley Anne Ivory and her astonishing watercolors based on her own cats in 1988, when her exclusive dealer and my friend, Chris Beetles, held what I believe was the first gallery exhibition of her work. That show included a number of Christmas-themed watercolors featuring her cats shown against windows, such as this one. When this watercolor turned up more than 30 years later, no date was given for its creation. And when I received the actual painting, which was framed, there was no date on the label on the back.

The actual title, "Christmas Cats," makes me think that it could be one of her earlier works, c. 1988. If it wasn't the earliest examples of this genre among her works, it wouldn't make sense to me that she would us this title. Ivory published a book entitled "Christmas Cat," which was illustrated with several of the similar watercolors, so why would she use this title for a painting that was done later than all the others? Moreover, I never had seen this work for sale at any earlier time. This could mean that this particular example, which I consider to be the best of the bunch, was held onto by Ivory or Beetles, for their own collection until they finally decided to part with it. I may never know the true history, but i'm certainly happy that it is now mine. I hadn't bought a new example of he paintings since the 1990s, but I couldn't resist buying this one!
