Description

Goldsmith was a Boston Globe sports and political cartoonist. In comics he is best known, unfortunately, for "Asa Spades," a strip that relied on racist caricature and stereotype. In 1912, as Teddy Roosevelt campaigned to regain the Presidency, Goldsmith produced some number of strips for the Globe depicting TR's life and achievements.

It's hard to say from this example whether the comics were supportive of Roosevelt or not; it spoofs TR's sneaky maneuvers to separate Panama from Columbia and bribe his way to building the Panama Canal. The strip is undated, and entitled (in pencil notation in the border), "He starts in to buy the canal site."

Unlike most of Goldsmith's work, this one uses a "stick-figure" technique; less artistry, perhaps, in the draughting, but plenty of energy and humor and character in the faces.

It shows the strong arming of other nations to get things done for the US. For or against? Teddy has never been depicted so slim, so maybe he would be in favor of this strip.
