DescriptionHere’s another impulse buy that I couldn’t resist. Let's start off by quoting ComicLink on the auction:"The Ruby-Spears archive of original Jack Kirby artwork has never been brought to market before. This exciting body of work was the brainchild of Ruby-Spears co-founders, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears (who were the co-creators of Scooby-Doo). The company hired Kirby in 1980 to work on the series Thundaar the Barbarian. Joe Ruby then asked Kirby to create visuals for original TV series concepts he wanted to seek funding for. Over eight years, Kirby took the ideas of Joe Ruby and turned them into characters, vehicles, gadgets and spaceships.Kirby was responsible for the pencils; other artists were employed to ink and color some of the pieces. The Ruby-Spears Kirby pieces offered here have not been seen by the general public since their creation in the 1980s. Pencil, ink, and water color on board." So, a lot of this artwork was actually seen via the "Jack Kirby The Unpublished Archives" card set, published by Comic Images in 1994. This image of "Rogue Force" was used for limited 24-Karat Gold Signature Cards (limited to 500) and also some promotional cards printed without the signature. Thanks to the card set (#15), I was able to identify the characters (from left to right). Not a joke-- these are their real names and back stories: • Kreep - Kreep looks like a runaway from a zoo, but he can generate natural forces that can destroy the world. • Beautiful Benji / Dirty Harald - Beautiful Benji is a rubber mask for Dirty Harald. • Number One - "Number One" is an anti-hero who takes care of "Number One" first. • Caroline Cupcake • Roger Ramrod Sadly Caroline Cupcake and Roger Ramrod have no back stories listed, so you'll have to use your imagination. While only Kirby is credited for pencils, I’m almost positive the inker was Alfredo Alcala. He inked other Kirby animation art and this really looks like his style to me. Unfortunately, I have no idea who did the coloring. My only complaint about the art is that it’s almost too huge! It takes up of most of a gigantic 20” x 30” board which is then glued to a black matte that takes up another inch on each side. I’ll have to figure out how to properly display and store this. The photo really doesn’t do it justice. The colors really pop and are much more vivid in person, but this is the best I could do right now. Social/Sharing |

100% it's Alcala inks. Thanks for the info about the card set! One of the big questions I have about this body of work is what ideas/names were Joe Ruby and which ones were Jack. The Benji/Harold concept is Kirby-esque, as is the name Kreep. The other names, including Rogue Force, don't sound like Kirby to me (I'm on the fence about Caroline & Roger!). But anyway congrats on your ginormous Kirby!

Thanks Aaron! I'm really hoping someone can dig up more detailed info from the Ruby-Spears archives on the art and concepts, but I'm not sure how good their records were.

When you were Rogue Force
Shouldn't Ramrod in the eye
You're just like Alcala
Your skin makes me cry
One floats like a Number
Benji beautiful world
I wish I was special
Caroline Cupcake special
But I'm a Kreep
Dirty Harold
What the hell am I doin' here?
Kirby belongs here
