DescriptionThanks to a most excellent new friend I can FINALLY add a page featuring Hob Gadling. This kind of graphic storytelling is Hempel at his best. The emotion on Hob's face is clear as day and the embellishments bringing balance throughout are fractalicious.Hob's 'friendship' with Dream is one of the most inspired lynchpins of the entire series. I always enjoyed when Hob would re-appear in the story, and how his character evolved over the years. Here we see Hob dealing with some of the unpleasant aspect of his immortality. Social/Sharing |

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
Gadling alone
Gazing at my Hempel of the graves below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow
I read a lot, I read Neil Gaiman
I've built walls
Packages deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of slowship, slowship causes pains
Disaster and no tracking I distain
I send to rocks I send to islands
Don't talk of love
Well Neil's wrote the word before
It's sleeping in One so Kindly
I won't disturb the slumber of Dreaming that have tried
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock I am an island
I have my books
And my D'Israeli to protect me
I am shielded in page turners
Hiding in my room safe within my tome
Art touches someone and Gaiman touches me
I post the art, It's not an island
Cuz' a rock knows no pain
And an island never cries

Here's where Gaiman shines. The quiet moments. When Hempel took over as an artist I'll admit I didn't really like the art at the start but eventually it started to work for me. It's pages like this where his work shines. Congrats.

Everyone has their favorite Sandman artist. This one is mine. Wonderful page. I hope to have one on my wall one of these days!

The spare details Hempel uses expressed the sadness of Hob's dilemma perfectly. Cheers!

Incredible score here, M L. That first panel blows my mind with its breathtaking composition and execution. Leaving the ground covered in snow like that, showing us only the headstones of all but the recently covered-with-earth grave, Hempel gives the illusion of the headstones falling from the sky along with the snowflakes, and shows us how Hob must feel at times like this: that everyone he knows falls around him so quickly, like snowflakes. Insane level of storytelling on display here, by both writer and artist: the four words committed to the whole page in panel 4 (notwithstanding the story title) are plenty, letting the moment develop through the beautiful stylings of Marc Hempel. What an add, M L - sincere congrats!

Gorgeous Sandman page! Love that top splash with what appear, for a moment, to be headstones floating in empty space--It's almost dizzying. And that is followed by the two close ups of Hob placing flowers at the grave, bringing you back down to earth, so to speak. Very moving.
