DescriptionAll-New Captain America #1-6 are among my favorite comics from the 2010s. When it was coming out, Rick Remender crafted a true edge-of-your-seat experience in those initial 6 issues. What originally drew me to ordering the book, other than my love for Captain America, was the fact that Stuart Immonen was the penciller assigned to the book.I remember when he worked on Nextwave for Marvel and Warren Ellis pointed out how intense and hard-working Immonen was as an artist. And he's only gotten more sophisticated since that time collaborating with Ellis. Reading All-New Cap was a real treat thanks in great part to Immonen's ability to illustrate fluid action and make the 2D experience of reading a comic feel almost as if the images within the panels moved and were animated. Issue #1 was such a wonderful first issue to establish Sam as the new Captain America. And Immonen made him come to life. Reading issue #2, though, was special. I became more intrigued by the developments of the plot; the action felt more strategic than that in the first issue, which naturally is expected to grab the attention of the audience and set the groundwork, right? Number 2 seemed focused on providing the intrigue to appeal to my deeper interest in following the book. Combine this goal with Immonen and inker Wade von Grawbadger's art and pages like this one created a truly memorable scene for me. I can remember turning the page from 13 to 14 in this issue, the page you see here, and I literally whispered, "Wow." That first image from this page completely arrested me, and I wanted to know who and what I was looking at. I wasn't initially cognizant of what I was looking at. Not exactly. I stopped reading and just gazed at this mysterious masked woman tossing a crushing upper-cut kick to an enemy soldier. The kinetic energy was electric. I read the panel with surround-sound and could hear the crack of the enemy's jaw as he was lifted up from the ground off of his feet by this enigmatic ally of Sam's. This was one of those times I knew I had to own the page. When I looked for it years ago, I found it on the old Fanfare site that is no longer in operation. Sadly, I did not have the money at the time to purchase the page. My budget was MUCH smaller then. Then the site shut down and I didn't know what happened to the art. I tried contacting both Immonen and von Grawbadger, but with no success. If I recall correctly, I tried contacting Essential Sequential since they rep von Grawbadger, but nothing came of that. So I thought I'd completely lost my chance to own this page I love. Then, I learned years later that Felix became Immonen's art dealer. And then, some time shortly after that, Felix posted that there was going to be an Immonen art drop. This was during the quarantine thankfully. I say that because Felix's art drops are, as I am sure most of you know, an OA collector's feeding frenzy. (Lol!) Art drops on his site and it GOES. And you better not blink or you'll lose out on that page you want, right? So since I was home due to the quarantine, and not in the classroom, I had a stronger chance of not missing out. I was determined. I knew there would be pages from All-New Cap. I made a comment on Felix's post that I was looking for a specific page and hoped I would get lucky, trying to put that positive energy out there to appeal to the universe. And clearly... it paid off. I love Love LOVE this page. And I hope you all find some enjoyment looking at it with me. Thanks so much for viewing! Social/Sharing |

Play Misty for me.
The first time ever I kicked your face
I thought the leg rose from your thighs
And Immonen the arts were the gifts Stu gave
To All New Captain Wilson, my love
And the first time Misty Knight knocked him out
I felt the page move in my hand
Like the trembling art of a Falcon bird
Page was there at my command, my love

Ryan, your superb write-up does the page proud! And what a page it is! Stuart's anatomical command is center stage here, of course, with the visceral impact of that kick making the viewer's teeth rattle (and possibly even more impressive than Misty's blow is how Crossbones' recoiling from the impact sells it - look at the inking detail in the arms, hands, clothing, feet... SO good...). The thing that might maximize the potential pain from the kick, I think, is the left foot planted on the ground... that gives us a VERY clear view of the heels on the boots Misty is wearing (and allows us to project that onto poor Crossbones). Panel two has some more excellent inking touches (especially the shield), and you just KNOW that the detail of the crack in the wall is supposed to be how Crossbones is presently feeling (sort of the dramatic equivalent of tweety birds flying around his head :) ).
I am in absolutely agreement with you about how spectacular this all-too-brief run of 'All-New Cap' was, and how Stuart and Wade's art was taken to another level in it. It does my heart GOOD to know that you got exactly the piece you were after when Felix posted the pages! Mega-congrats, Ryan, and thanks for sharing this with us!

Youre so right about the significance of that left foot. Thanks for the comment, Jason!

Love these kinds of pages! Got that great splash with some storytelling panels surrounding! Love that kick. Whew. Can feel that one through the page! And you got the follow up, too. Immonen really killed it on this series, one of his best runs to date. Right there with you in my affinity, man. Congrats!

Congrats on landing the page you were after! It's always great to hear when a single piece resonates with a collector, and they're able to pick up the art for it.
I actually managed to pick up an Immonen piece from Felix recently that I let pass me by years ago (on the Fanfare site, no less!). It'll be a while until I get around to scanning/posting it, but it's funny how things work out :)

The Remender/Immonen run was a breath of fresh air. It showed how clearly Sam Wilson is a true hero and a worthy successor to Steve Rogers. Thank you for giving that run the credit it is due.
Stuart's work is so kinetic and action-packed and this page is no different. What a gem for your collection!

The only problem with their run was that it was only 6 issues. But man did they burn bright throughout those comics.
Thank you for taking the time writing a comment for this page. Your collection is full of great gems. All the best!
