Description

Two pages to post today: a beautiful pair that perfectly show that Ben Grimm’s blue collar roots go far deeper than just his FF jumpsuit uniform…

Strapped with financial hardship once again, the FF look for alternate means of bringing in some rent money… but Ben does his job a bit too well, and is asked by the site foreman to slow things down a bit so everyone else can make a living, too.

There’s some beautiful execution on this page: I love the impact of the cinder blocks landing in panel 2 (beautiful dust swirls!) not to mention the “truth” in the moment as the foreman jumps back: these are very real people here. The silhouettes of Ben’s foreground co-workers focus the viewer’s eyes in on the center of the panel (and then setup a nice contrast to Ben’s shaded form in the following panel, below). The inking in panel 3, with Ben slowly turning towards the foreman to continue the discussion, is dramatic and hilarious, and you gotta give the foreman credit for standing strong: space gods have withered before the look that Ben gives him here.

But there are some really -small- touches on this page that are among my favorites: Ben’s huge boot track on the ground (compared with the foreman’s) at the top of panel 1; the detail on the back of the foreman’s neck and ears (and the strap on the back of his hard hat) in panel 3; the insanely precise inking on the foreman in panel 4 - his helmet, hair, and then the beautifully rendered patterns on his shirt and vest. Just amazing work.

Superb storytelling featuring the gorgeous, crisp pencils of Steve with nothing short of surgical-level inks by the one and only Mark Morales. Thanks again, Tyler!

Just cause he can lift more doesn't mean he's gonna be paid more! Great page, love the inks by Mark!

They need to switch it to bid jobs instead of hourly. They will all be retired on Yancy Street in no time.

'Cause I get home to look at art
And I take myself out an ice cold beer
Always seem to be worryin’
Why construction goin' down here

It seems to me
I could Marvel Knights
A lot better than the Thing I am
I guess that's why they call Steve
McNiven man

Well, they call Steve the workin' man
I guess that's why I’m fan

I've really enjoyed seeing McNiven's style evolve over the years. The thin and precise line he uses here is really appealing and Morales' inks are very complimentary, as usual. I also love the camera angle in the first panel and the way Ben's face is shadowed in the 3rd. Kudos, my friend!

Really love this page, that top image especially.  I think it's so cool when the art 'breaks panel,' and what a cool perspective.  You really feel the impact of the tower of cinder blocks hitting the ground in panel two.  And then those close-up panels are awesome.  Congrats on this two-page sequence!

What I distinctly remember from those issues and still like to this day about Mcniven's rendition of the Thing is his version of a character made of stones is just slick. You see the stones delineations on his skin and yet it appears super smooth. This was quite the novel approach to me.

McNiven and Morales's lined are so clean.  Awesome you go the back to back pages to up the top to bottom to top to bottom storytelling :)  And when you see this Thing, NO question it's McNiven's.  Congrats on both pick ups!

Marvelous storytelling on this Marvel Knights page. I love these scenes of Ben Grimm trying to make money by pitching in to tear down a building only to have the other workers complain that he works too hard and does too good a job. The whole situation is such a classic Fantastic Four moment. Amazing work featuring the precise pencils of Steve Mciven and the crisp inks of Mark Morales. Fabulous pick-up, congrats!
