Description"Groo Does What Groo Does Best" Aftermath Colored Artwork (1995) Sergio Aragones Groo & Rufferto9" x 12" Pen, Ink, & Colored Pencils Very excited about this pick-up from Comic Art Live Spring 2022 this past weekend! Much thanks to Paul Ference for making this beauty available and selling it to me. My wife was surprised at my excitement when I told her I picked up an Aragones Groo sketch remarking 'you only buy published artwork' (yes, our weekly watching of Dueling Dealers has taught her well). I've tried to change my collecting strategy a bit to get samples of artwork from comics that I loved aside from the early bronze age issues when I first started collecting. While watching Dueling Dealers recently I thought to myself "how can I not have any Groo artwork?" Research showed not much available for sale out there and very high prices. I determined due to cost and scarcity of published pages I'd accept a sketch, but I wanted it to be detailed and have a published feel. I was thrilled to find this sketch/commission on CAL (maybe those of you that collect this stuff regularly can help me to properly classify this) at a price that seemed reasonable in the current marketplace. Very cool that this was colored giving it an even more finished look. An amazing amount of detail to this piece - well defined images of Groo and Rufferto with their smug expressions, the smoke rising from the carnage of bodies Groo has left behind after the fray ... I love the blue coloring of the sky and the colors of the smoke making the images of Groo and Rufferto even more pronounced. This could easily be used for a trade paperback cover or back cover. I soooo love this!!!!! I've been a big Groo fan since his initial appearances in the independent comics of the early 1980's. When Marvel picked up Groo I ordered very heavily for our comic store and placed a copy of the first issue in the hold boxes of everyone on our comic club member subscription list. When anyone commented that they hadn't reserved it I told them they certainly didn't have to buy it but talked up how great it was and that if they don't love it, they can return it. I don't recall any returns and we had a big Groo following for a long time. The only disappointment was the one kid who came to me some months later asking if I had any other recommendations for him because he was thrilled that Groo #1 went up in value... he just didn't get it. I would say that is a piece he did in his studio that he brought to conventions to sell. He would have a small portfolio of pieces and this would be one of the high end ones being fully finsihed and colored.

Thanks so much for the additional insight Marcus. It definitely seemed more than a quick sketch and your explanation makes much sense. I'm just really glad he did so and I was fortunate enough to become the caretaker.

I said...Where's. My. CHEESE DIP?!?! I was a HUGE Groo fan, too, and went a similar route. Got my Groo in an Aragones Mad Marginals page that was a lot less than an actual Groo page. And you wouldn't get a better Groo image than this, anyhow. Full color, battle pose, with Rufferto and Tongue Out victims? Perfect. Big congrats!

It's impossible to look at anything created by Sergio and not immediately smile. Congrats on the fabulous pickup!
