Can't say I've seen any of Strawn's artwork previously but I definitely dig his style. Some very cool pages.
Awesome cover! What a treat it is for Flash fans to have Cardy's beautiful rendition of Barry along with two of his longest term rogues. Seeing this cover again today and reading the dialogue it did made me think they must have had same crazy large currency bills in circulation on Earth-1 back then.
So cool for you to own such a spectacular piece of comic lore and certainly appropos for this Legion-centric page, their "last salute" to Superman, to be in your amazing collection. While Crisis ushered in the end of the bronze age of comics(along with the silver age), this two-part story by Alan Moore was certainly it's epitaph. Just reread both issues for the first time in decades and it was just as big a gut-punch as when it was released. Perez over Swan was just stunning in the whole issue but in the Legion sequence you can see he shifted his inking style to evoke the silver age Legion feel. In reading the story again, Moore's introduction hit me as hard as it did forty years ago, "This is an Imaginary Story ... Aren't they all?" I've remembered those words all these years and the possibility and hope they inspired. But in rereading today another poignant line stood out, "Why is it that the noblest people are the ones most troubled by conscience?" Moore crafted nothing less than a Superman horror story as the violent modern-age comics writing style invaded the panels of its silver-bronze story narrative signaling its end... the end of an era. Yet, the final story panels conclude with new hope and a familar bronze-age wink signaling it will always endure and inspire. Thanks for sharing this wonderful artwork and prompting me to revisit this classic meaningful story.
Wow!!! Overjoyed to stumble across the original art for this awesome cover in your gallery. So cool!!! This was from my first month of comic collecting although the second issue of Marvel Team-Up my buddy and I got off the newstand. Two nine-year old boys couldn't have been more thrilled to see Spidey team up with Frankenstein (prior issue) and Wolfman here (yes, I know Frankenstein's Monster and Man-Wolf). What a sense of wonder to combine our love of (classic) monsters with super-heroes.
Amazing cover! Totally awesome Torch image with a great Spidey image plus a menacing Kang!
Wow! Impressive action page by the future Defenders!
Great page from a great story! Austin makes everyone look good and even moreso when the penciler doesn't need the help like Nasser who is already so good. Awesome!!!
Wow!!! So cool!! Bill needs to feature this one for the masses! This is such a great Fantastic Four commission with its heart front and center. So glad I stumbled across it checking out your gallery.
From my first year of comic collecting - although my buddy was the big Spidey fan so when I first read this issue it was likely from his collection (although we tended to trade back and forth back then) - this was a very cool storyline that we reread many times over. And in thinking about it...likely our introduction to Dr Doom! Great page with even greater memories...
I remember you said that it was your first Green Lantern comic but didn't know the story connected with you dad the way you expressed it here. Makes me even happier the art ended up in your hands. And an added bonus that Old Timer takes off on a motorcycle on this page. Anything I can do to connect someone with their dad in a positive way is a blessing to me - seems we lost our dads around the same time. I had this page fifteen years - may you enjoy it even longer.
So much to love about this page but the highlight certainly is the end of the race in that awesome oversized first panel!
Great cover! Totally agree it includes very desirable elements for both Sable cover with focus on Grell strong points. It definitely caught my attention in the recent auction. Big congrats!
Great summary page from this favorite multi-issue saga! Love it.
Great mash-up commission!
Do we get extra credit if we identified the two inspirational sources before reading your description?
Cool action packed cover! And an even cooler story - congrats on your grail!
"Shiny club hurt Hulk... now Hulk will hurt shiny club!" Classic! That pretty much sums up why we loved the Green Goliath during the bronze age.
What a cool title splash with Sergio "plopizing" the DC horror hosts in his humorous signature style. Great stuff!!!
What a great page! First Issue! Hulk smashing and Doctor Strange doing all sorts of mystical stuff. Very cool.
That's so cool that this was from a favorite story! Not enough artwork has survived from bygone years so its always a thrill when we get to see an original page that helps us reexperience past positive memories. Glad posting this provided that for you. And thanks for all the favorable comments you left on my collection today.
