DescriptionPublished 1972Five Dooms to Save Tomorrow! The story was originally written by Harlan Ellison as a synopsis for a Hawkman story. When Julius Schwartz at DC chose not to buy it, it was printed in the fanzine Comic Art Vol 1 7, which is where Thomas saw it. Thomas then contacted Ellison to buy the story and adapt it for Marvel. On this page the Watcher tells Lonard Tippit that only he can save the world from a nuclear armageddon. No Avengers on this page but I am happy to have it as this more of a Watcher story than an Avengers story and Harlan Ellison is one of my favorite writers. Social/Sharing |

Five Dooms to Save Tomorrow's fate
No Avengers cover, panel art to come my way
Roy Thomas brings, Harlan's Hawkling
In fact, here's a dreaded radioactive plague
No acid rain, the future boom
The scanning my art day post in the month of June
But page this is, is something true
Made up of Harlan's words that I must say to you
I just came to see Uatu
I just watch today, how much I stare
I just came to see Uatu
And I mean it from the Buckler in my art

Who cares ifthere's no Avengers on this one? There's no room for them anyway. This is definitely better as a Watcher featured page, with wonderful draftsmanship throughout. I wouldn't be surprised if Buckler had looked at some of Buscema's art before drawing the 2nd tier of panels, because those hands are all Big John! Great stuff.

Geez. No pressure Leonard.
Yeah! Doctor Who basically lifted this speech and recited it to one of the Doctor's companions, who's looked at with disgust the whole time. Damn focal points, pull your weight.

Didn't know any of the backstory of how this issue came to be, but it was one of my earliest exposures to the Avengers and the Watcher. I remember it was really unsettling to me to Leonard Tippett killing people to save the world.

Yes, it was an unsettling story but the type of story that Harlan was known for. For instance here's the plot of his award winning short story Jeffty Is Five.
