DescriptionPoor Man-Thing has never blossomed like his DC counterpart (having been unable to escape the intense quicksand-like confines of his “shambling monster”-dom), but he has remained a favorite of mine thanks to the brilliant character design. It’s uniquely striking, genuinely scary, and (most importantly) allows ample opportunity for different artists to put their own individual spin on it.Jim Cheung’s take on the swamp monster is (no surprise) awesome, but I find the backgrounds just as impressive and essential to the mood of the piece here, with the lush texturing of the shadowy trees (especially on the lower half) and the sickly moonlight (from the upper left corner) barely able to penetrate the tree canopy… Happy Halloween, everyone! I miss these lush, layered multimedia pieces from Jim. The pose is spot on Man-Thing, gazing into the viewer's soul.

I love how the piece is mostly tonal, with the minimal linework only used to corral and shape the various shades.

Time, I've been passing time watching Cheungs art lines
All of my life
Confined by quicksand watching Swamp Thing’s eyes
Wishing Ted would be artwork waiting home for me
Man-Thing’s telling me he’s MCU
It's telling me it’s wash for you
Marvel for life
Looking back as Sallis go walking past
Fear for my life
Wondering how vegetation is body mass
If ink washed his gaze
Would you recognize Ted’s face?
Man-Thing’s telling me he’s MCU
Yeah, it's telling me he’s art for you

You gotta love Cheung's grey tones execution with them markers! And with a pretty...textured character like Man-Thing he really gets to show out :) Congrats, Jason!

I'm very nearly jealous of that one as I hesitated to ask fa MT from Jim whenever I met him over the years. That's a winner for sure.

I think we'll be seeing a lot more of Man-Thing in the coming days

Seriously creepy portrait of Man-Thing by Jim Cheung, and I mean that as a compliment. Not everyone is into horror, but Cheung really embraced Man-Thing's frightening appearance for this convention sketch. It's really scary, but that's good.
