Description

Latest "Continuation Project" commission - All-Star Squadron #145, drawn by long-time contributor Shawn van Briesen, and based as always on the cover of a comic written, plotted or scripted by Roy Thomas, in this case Sal Buscema and Sam Grainger's cover to Avengers #67.

Title: "The Element Of Destruction!"

Story: Last issue, Johnny Quick, Liberty Belle, Robotman and Firebrand were suspended from the All-Star Squadron by Presidential order - just as an alliance of villains attacked their headquarters and wrecked the Perisphere. Finding a dropped note which identified five targets, Squadron co-chairman Hawkman quickly despatches five groups of heroes to intercept the villains...

As their signal alerts sound, several members of the Squadron converge on Bedloe Island - Jay (Flash) Garrick, with foot-tall passenger Darrell (Doll Man) Dane, rush from a chemist's conference; Daily Star reporter Clark (Superman) Kent, in New York on assignment, quickly changes into his costume in a convenient phone booth; both Jim (Spectre) Corrigan and Chuck (Jester) Lane temporarily put aside their policing duties to answer the call; and Ted (Starman) Knight departs his midtown penthouse, all thoughts of an evening at the observatory put behind him.

Arriving at the site of the world-famous Statue Of Liberty, the six stalwarts are confronted by Professor Radium, threatening to use his radioactive powers to melt the giant symbol of America! As they race to restrain him, all are affected by the weird radiations emanating for the villain, which paralyse even the mighty Superman and the etheral Spectre!

With Lady Liberty at Professor Radium's mercy, Doll Man makes a desparate lunge for Starman's gravity rod - and his lucky random pressing of the control studs shoots a ray from the device at the Jester, who finds himself briefly protected from Professor Radium's aura!

As Doll Man struggles to repeat his feat, the Jester hurls Quinopolis, his trusty marotte, at the villain, knocking him down - and a revived Superman, Flash and Starman are quickly able to overpower him, even as the Spectre shakes off the effects of Radium's rays.

Now captured, Radium bemoans the failure of the plan, claiming that the other villains were supposed to come to his aid --- but the All-Stars' attempts to question him further are interrupted by a shocking message coming to them over their radios (and you'll find out exactly what that message is shortly - but not in the next issue).

Continued - next time!

Nice! Very fun reinterpretation : )

Oh how I wish All-Star Squadron would come back and eventually revert to legacy numbering like Marvel does with its titles....I would love to see it make it to issue 145 and beyond : )

Really cool with Jester's costume having the stripes and sleeve print to match the power of the Kirby Krackle!
