DescriptionFor a while, each Monday I will be sharing with you a significant moment from Spider-Man's life. Starting with this beauty from 1983.One of the most interesting things about the Spidey/Black Cat romance was that although Peter Parker loved Felicia Hardy as both Felicia and her Black Cat persona, Felicia only really loved Peter as Spider-Man. This is something Peter discovers on this very page from SpectSM #87 when he finally reveals his secret identity (and where he lives) to the Black Cat. This reveal clearly upsets Felicia (first three panels), and when Peter claims his love for her, she says "And I love you ... Spider-Man!" Peter takes the hint and once again dons his mask, causing Felicia to instantly brighten up and get all excited about being with her 'mystery man' once again. Well, I guess every relationship has its issues. I just love how the Black Cat is drawn here, especially with those lovely close-ups in the 4th and 9th panels. Thanks for looking! Social/Sharing |

This was a great era for the Peter Parker title. I loved this stuff. But I have to say, I clearly remember reading this page in 1983 and being turned off by Felicia when she revealed herself to be more superficial than anything else, but I was even MORE turned off by Peter's spineless reaction to her. Seriously? She just told you she doesn't give a shit about you as a person and only cares about the thrills you provide during your side job, and you happily go along with it?!? Ugh....that was SO hard to stomach. Such a momentous time in his life though. A really fabulous page!

Some good points, Ruben. Best way to explain it is that this was Peter's "bad girl phase," and speaking from experience, clear thinking and self preservation pretty much go out the window when a guy is going through it. Plus, the Black Cat was so hot! Peter was willing to put with a lot. The crazy dynamics really made for an interesting romance.

Oh yeah, it was a very interesting dynamic for sure, it's just that my happiness went south right at this moment and it wasn't due to either one of them alone, but rather the BOTH of them disappointing me! But it just goes to show how great of an era this was, that a singular moment like this could stir such feelings andemotions inside me. I felt like the stories in this era really grabbed me and sucked me into their world, you know? Great times!

I totally hear ya! Giving the heroes & heroines flaws and blind spots like the rest of us mere mortals make us even more emotionally invested in the stories. Case in point, your feeling of disappointment in Spidey for staying in an unhealthy relationship and your annoyance at Felicia for belittling Peter as a person. Speaking of flaws, what bugs me is that they never show the heroes chowing down on junk food. Or gaining 10-15 pounds that they then need to struggle to drop. I seem to remember '90s Spidey being seen scarfing down a burger or a pizza every once in a while. I miss those days.

Oh wait, we did get Fat Thor in the MCU movies. So yeah, Marvel does address the flaw of overeating too. Good for them!!

The ultimate rejection. I love you, but only the exciting parts, the rest of you is as boring at peanut butter!

But of course Felicia is crazy. They did lock her up for mental health issues. Bedtime, with poor Peter forced to wear the mask. A vision I could not unimagine at the time.

Ohh, so jealous here! A nice Milgrom Spec Spidey example is still on the checklist yet to be checked. Classic angst that was a part of the series between this on-again-off-again couple, and I love it! Keep that mask on, Pete ;) Congrats, Paul!

Thanks for the great comment, K! There sure was a lot of angst involved with this relationship. And yet, there must have been some real comfort in dating someone who was also in "the biz." You keep the same hours, you can team up, and you can dryclean your costumes together!

A HUGE moment in the Spidey/Black Cat relationship. I remember picking up this period of PPTSSM issues in quarter bins in '86, making them and the early issues of Web of Spider-Man my first real comic book exposure to the world of Peter Parker. Classic stuff that's still a great read today.

I've always enjoyed Black Cat and Spidey's chemistry (or lack thereof as Peter Parker). Great page, Paul. Black Cat looks fantastic in this page!

She may be crazy but it just may be a lunatic that Peter is looking for...everyone loves the Black Cat!

Are we any different? We value Spidey in his mask and in costume on our original art over plain Peter Parker pages. This is a gorgeous page with those Jim Mooney inks that have that soft romantic touch.

That is a VERY good point, Marcus. We are all like the Black Cat in that we want Spidey in mask & costume on our original art pages. Art imitating life, and vice versa! Well done!!

They are easier to sell. Thats why we value them more. We are all shallow. I refer to it as Batman punching the Joker through a wall syndrome. Of course theres no action in this page but it does have emotion and a very hot lady. Wheres my Spidey mask gone?
