DescriptionNice Wash Tubbs daily with an underwater scene and all the main characters. The racial stereotypes used by Crane to create humor are had to look at with a contemporary perspective. These should be viewed with the lens of understanding what social norms were at the time of publication and perhaps inferring what Crane's intentions were. It doesn't make it right but we can't cancel all of the past. This piece comes to me by trade from a friend and before that was from the Bob Murphy collection where it resided for over 50 years. Wonderful daily...I especially like that second underwater panel!
I second your thoughts on the racial stereotypes presented in Wash Tubbs and some other comic strips of the time...
