Description

Continuing posting splash pages with this lovely rendition of Jessica Jones by Mr. David Marquez. I straight up love this piece. Saw it on CAF at one point then up for auction on ComicLink last year. I was ALL over it.

I remember being super impressed with the 2014 Marvel Young Guns class. Marquez here, Pichelli, Stegman, Bradshaw, Asrar, and Schiti. I’m lucky to have nice examples from all, including quite a few Stegman pieces :)

But I remember really liking the faces, particularly the female faces, that Marquez and Pichelli drew. Just a nice mix of elegance and strength. My Marquez cover’s got a great calm yet powerful Dagger (https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1076094) and my Pichelli cover – Jean and Gamora ripping into some dudes (https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1272423).

So this was in the same vein. First, was that face here on Jessica. So lovely but also a no-nonsense look. Second, parts of the piece, like her hair and the blinds, got a rougher more organic look, but you also got parts with a more realistic look – like those boots! Check out the rendering with the brush work. They look real!

Piece was used as the title page image, but they shrunk it to fit horizontally with the lettering above and below. Not sure I would’ve gone that route, but hey, got the 11x17 OA here for myself and my fellow collectors to view! So all good. Hope you like!

Just so blown away by this.  While not the Defenders I know and love (hey, I'm old), and not an artist I'm familiar with, I just love this piece.  The inkwork on her jacket and boots is fantastic.  Nothing like looking at great art first thing in the morning.  I mean, how can you not love CAF?

David Marquez definitely knows how to draw some realistic figures.  I have some more fun pieces of his work that I will be posting soon.  The way he draws women is absolutely beautiful.  Thanks again fir passing forward that gorgeous Rogue cover piece from his AXIS new comers Marvel work.

Looking forward to seeing the coming Marquez posts, man!  And no problem on the Rogue - it's in the right collection, no doubt :)  Thanks for picking it up!  But yep...after moving it to you...I needed another Marquez lady in my life :)  Thanks, James, and all, for the comments!

Very cool - I especially love the details on her boots and jeans.

Hey, K! I have to agree with Eric and Nathan above about Marquez's level of detail on Jessica's jacket and boots. So tasty!

But what really draws me to this DPS is Jessica's face and accompanying body language. Her face looks a bit like it should be found in a manga rather than an American comic book. I would say with the current Marvel and DC house styles, this detailed piece feels somewhat European or Asian-inspired, which to me only signifies just how unique this modern era DPS really is.

Thanks for sharing, K! All the best, dude.

Yeah, man, thoses boots!  Those and her face?!  Was a done deal for me.  Also gotta great vibe, too, right?  Just oozes Jessica.

I actually didn't see a manga look, but now that you mention, I can see a little.  But not super evident, IMO.  They do say with art we see different things, right?!  :)  Appreciate the add, Ryan, and all the best to you, too!

Very nice and sexy. Somehow, it reminds me of Benitez's way of drawing women.

My eyes were instantly drawn to her boots. Just the amout of detail he put into the boots is insane. Awesome pick up and thanks for sharing!

And yet it isn't hyperrealism exactly... man, what a statement.

Lol, exactly, man!  There's some hyperrealism, like them boots.  But I actually prefer the inexactness in other areas, like the blinds.  But yes!  This character's character is evident :)  Thanks, Steve!

Haven't read the newer stuff this came from, but looks like they made her more in Krysten Ritter's likeness. I'm here for it, and yeah, shame this image wasn't printed bigger. But great OA!

Yeah, the jacket and boots are what make this piece "pop" for me, and of course that beautiful face.  The whole image really captures the moody feel of the Jessica Jones Netflix series that I really enjoyed watching.  David Marquez really rocks out on this one.

Loving the vibe all around here. What seals it for me is the blinds in the background. Gives it that old school detective  movie feel which is perfect for Jessica Jones.

Y'know, I didn't think of the blinds being a main draw but when I pore over again they're so impactful.  Truly an image where the "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" adage applies!  Thanks, Victor!

Lol oh... I didn't mean the blinds were the main attraction. More like the icing on an already pretty sweet piece of cake.

I feel a hunger, it's art hunger
That tries to keep a man awake at night
Is art the answer? It's for Defenders
When I hire you as my private eye

With all the streaming they're releasing
It isn't safe to walk the city streets for Jones
Anticipation King Pinning through me
Let's find Marquez and turn this Echo on

I can feel Luke breathe
I can feel your art bids higher

Bendis Jones he writes
I don't want a Netflix show 'til you see the Ike
Take this Jones tonight
Listen honey, just like Feige sang, "Maybe she's in Disney"

From the first line, buddy, from the first line!  And "with all the streaming they're releasing" just ROLLS, lol!  :)  Thanks, buddy, always appreciate the lift I get singing these to myself!

Fantastic piece, K!  The boots, the hair, the jacket... all the details everyone has pointed out are superb, but I'm in agreement with Victor G here; setting all that gorgeous work against the backdrop of those blinds is what really makes the thing pop for me.  The whole vertical spread feels so natural, not only with a character reclining across it, but with how those blinds stretch across the whole image.  All the elements combine to achieve a most enchanting visual cocktail.  And a Bendis book, too?  Yeah - top shelf here, pal. :)  Terrific add, K G!  Definitely need to pick up a Marquez of my own.  Congrats, man!

Love this page - Jessica looks great - captures the tude very well. Love the blinds in the back - especially that blind that never aligns correctly (there is always one!). Congrats!

As a fan of 1930's to 60's Hollywood Film Noir, especially crime/detective type stuff, I heartily approve of this piece! I love how he used such a finely detailed line to draw the creases in the pants, as the technique immediately sells it as a pair of tight, stretch jeans. All the dry brush to delineate the leather jacket and boots sells the texture as well. So great!
